I will be posting some pictures hopefully tonight, it has the original dash sticker, with red behind it, as well as red under the dash etc. if im not mistaken it is a OCT. 1969 and would confirm what Mike is saying as it is a 70 Model. I will also post the vin on here, what year was the first RII?

    Brad,

My jeep appears to have bright yellow under the (peeling) black paint. Probably a similar color to the Renegade II you posted. It's pretty hard to get accurate colors from the computer as it depends so much on the color adjustment of the monitor. I haven't seen a color chart for '70 to see what it might match up with, and haven't tried stripping it down further to see if there is another color under the yellow (I doubt it). Some day I'll strip it down to bare metal and do a proper repair/paint job on it! It sure would be nice if we could get and post the color charts for '70/'71!

I have seen a 1971 color chart at the local paint place. Don't get down there very often though, they are way over on the other side.

I just want the record to show that I blasted every spot of green off my R1 and painted it with Concept Budweiser Racing Red, base coat, clear coat. So in 20 years when some guy is scratching his head wondering if that red was a factory color - he can come here and search out this thread.

I went with the red because I didn't like the green - then, now I am sad.....

sorry to bring this back after so long

while researching another paint/body trim tag question for another member, (while doing a search, actually) I may have stumbled onto an explanation for the code tag discussed above
It turns out that there are 3 different tag numbers for the color President Red: 78, 226, and 398.(early, middle, and late years)
    All have different formulas.
Has this info been known/discovered previously ? am I all wet?
Still, haven't figured out why orange would be called red...
    anybody??

Jim I still have never figured this out, my Jeep still has the original paint job for now, the paint coder tag is there and does say 226 but the paint is no where near what I have seen for president red. The underside of my dash is definately not close to red. If someone has a decent picture of a president red Jeep I will post the picture of mine below it for comparsion.
I guess what you're saying could be true, maybe my formula is just closer to orange than red.

Carousel Red on GTO's looked awefully orange... Just a thought. I may be all wet too. :D

Jeepsterman I had a beer with Panzer.

Rangoon Red on Ford cars was also very Orange looking. Most people think the mUstang has faded from Red.

Hmmm...Dutch was Ford Rangoon Red (Dad had a Falcon that color)...and (to me anyway) only looked orange where it faded.

The door jams and underside of the trunk on the Mustang are still original paint and it does look a bit orange on that car. If I recall there has been some debate as to what the color actually looked like year to year.

Who knows what got mixed when Dad went for the paint either.

Although I had the Bantam painted that same Red, mixed by code, and it matched pretty nice.

I found these diagrams while snooping around in a 1972 FSM.
    shows the engine harness routing
take note of the 5 pin connector in the middle, not 6 pin as noted earlier.
above it you see a shadow image of "ballast"
the ballest wire goes to "temp override switch" (what is that???)
this must be part of the ballast discussion for the optional temp/oil press gauges, or ?????
the other photo is actually turn signals, but it does show the placement of the "optional' gauges in the dash ( yea, we already knew this)
anyway, found the pics and posted them !!

Or here's some actual photos from ThunderboltII's ebay ad. He's selling his Renegade I (originally green, but he painted it red). You can see the gauges and the ballast next to the firewall pass through.

Jim - Thanks for the pictures but they are not applicable to the RI/RII wiring even though the amp and oil pressure gauges would suggest otherwise. There are differences between the intermediate connectors and those on earlier CJs.

I just found it interesting that the ballast was shown in the diagram for the int models as well.
I thought I had read here in this thread (or somewhere)you had asked about the possible differences between the years......just trying to earn my atta-boy for the day !

Sorry Jim, I wasn't really following the thread. I just caught the last part.

Here's an atta-boy for you Jim. Your knowledge is always appreciated! So does anyone know what that ballast resistor is for (either Renegade or intermediate)?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

it's a 75 ohm resistor that's cutting the voltage to those added-in-the-dash gauges IMO.
much like the ballast on the V6 cuts the voltage to the points.
that temp cut-off switch that shows in the one pic, and wired to the ballast, I've never seen or heard of that before.
