That's some considerable storage. I had considered a bluetooth head unit, amp, and speakers, but went with a UE Boom Bluetooth Speaker instead.

A photo dump of the console.

Here is what was behind the armrest.

I had to tear the seat apart to cut this off without scarfing up the fabric or foam. You can see the plate I made to cover the hole in the fabric in the last pic in this series.

Here are the hinges on the console. I used old door hinges with removable pins. The Volvo glove box latch I’m using has a bit of a bad reputation with the internal mechanism breaking, and the latch becoming stuck shut, so I wanted to make sure if it failed I could still get the lid off.

Here is the tubing framework that got welded to the cage. The box drops down onto four studs and is secured with locknuts inside.

I raised it up a bit to work as an armrest, and I lopped off the top corners to more-properly follow the contour of the pad and compliment the look of the stereo box under it.

Upper lid open to expose the latch. You can see the magnet next to the latch. It sticks to a screw in the lid.

    Opened...

The framework will get finish-welded next time the cage is out.

I took it out for a thorough test drive. I figured out the cause of some steering vagueness... all four of my tires registered at 0 psi on my gauge. After I fixed that, road test felt great, and I tested 4wd with good success. Front driveshaft had no noticeable or visible vibration with hubs locked in 2wd at ~45 mph, and crawl gearing feels good. Not a hardcore rock crawler, but good general gearing at 40.5:1 compound low. This, on 32s, feels the same as my 3b that has 47:1 on 33s, plus it feels like it lugs better that the f-head. The fuel injection has a bit of a “governor effect” down low. Also, the parking brake is very strong; it easily locks the rear tires.

    Very pleased so far.

    47:1 low range? 3.73’s?

    FTFY :sneak:

Seriously though, for the 99% of what this will see, anything lower would be <too low in low> and <too high in high> with a terra low gear set. I’d like to build a dedicated plow rig, then I can rebuild the 3b as more of a trail Jeep. Trying to keep my eye on the main goal with this one.

    A few little things...

I made a plate to mount one of the ECMs to. The big holes are there to tack it to the body. This one went just to the left of the driver’s feet.

The hood was missing half of the hinge. I’m too cheap to spend $30 + shipping for a new hinge, so I made one out of old door hinges.

    More little things...
I’m trying to wrap this up while cleaning the shop, and I keep getting distracted.

I got the other ECU mounted.

I pulled a high pressure line off an old radial AC compressor I had in storage, and I cut the 1/2” tubing to add a flare. My double flaring tool does NOT like 1/2” steel tubing, so I had to disassemble the tool and use the individual parts in the hydraulic press.

The pressure line is getting routed along the front cage crossmember, then the check valve and pressure switch will get mounted next to the power steering reservoir on the passenger’s coil bucket. The front bumper will be the air tank, but I don’t want to build that until I have a particular winch in mind, so I can build the mount/fairlead into it also.

The plan for the compressor intake was to run a dedicated oiler and air filter, but it might just get T’d into the crank case vent that pipes into the intake. The oil vapor coming out of this old engine might supply as much lubrication as an oiler would, and if it’s not pulling air from the crankcase, it’s pulling it from the air filter. The only drawback might be a false reading to the MAF sensor?

I put all its clothes on for a beauty shot. I can’t wait for this thing to be one color.
