Post '72 cj5 steering shaft in ecj5 sag swap

    I'm looking for either a good donor vehicle to find a shaft of the right length, or would like to know if a post '72 cj5 shaft can telescope down enough to fit the shorter nose of my '67. My column and shaft are from a 89 xj, box and pump from a '79 caddy. I'm using the AA steering box mount too, so not a ton of room to move the box around. The shaft is about 6" short. I am also looking into spud shafts from Mcruff and AA if the group thinks that's a better option.

    Either way I'm guessing I'll be out about $100 to buy spud shafts, build a new shaft with correct parts, or buy the correct length shaft...advice?

    You're going to have to measure your setup and check the length you need. Each and every conversion like this is just a little different. There are places like Speedway and Summit that sell the double D slip shaft and you cut the shaft to length and put whatever joints you need on them.

    Thanks Nick. Any reasons to go one route vs another with regard to building the right setup or hunting the junkyard for the correct length?

    I've done it both ways. I found I like having new parts in there that is nice and clean looking on the install vs. used worn stuff that I've "made work" but it depends on your budget and what you can find in your area. Try and find a larger car, full size GM's like rear wheel drive Cadillacs seem to have good offerings to look at.
