wide track axles - what years, which models?

In response to a question on another board, I said that the CJs got the wide track axles from '82 on. Now, someone else claims that only CJ-7s got the wide axles. It was my understanding that all the CJs went wide track in 1982, CJ-5 included. Which is right?

I've read that too....supposedly only the CJ7 got the wider axles.
I don't know for sure, though.

Every time I've seen axles for sale it seems it's for a range of years, but will fit either CJ5 or CJ7. I suppose a quick look at the parts book for those years should be conclusive.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Different axle shafts listed for 82 and later CJ7-CJ8 only.
83 and prior CJ5 shafts the same.
    strange
I would have thought the same Tim.

    Didn't CJ5 cease production in 1983?

Best I can tell from monkeying with all sorts of late model jeep axles lately is ONLY CJ7 were widetrack starting in '82. All CJ5 remained narrow track until the model ended in '83. So even though some overlap in time they didn't convert the 5's.

82 is the split year Tim. I always look for the 'older than '82' for the NT setups. I know all the CJ7s are wider than the WT CJ5 - some call that 'full width' from the folks I know, while the CJ5 post 82 was not quite 'full width' when folks talk axles around here.

To add confusion to this, there were some very early production '82 CJ-7's with narrow track axles. I suspect the factory was using up old stock on the assembly line. I found this out the hard and expensive way.

True that Daryl. Way too many anomalies in the Jeep world.

Just to clarify - Chuck are you saying there are 3 different width of axles? The traditional early narrow track for both CJ5 and 7, the so called 'full width' wide track typical of the last few years of AMC CJ7 production and an intermediate width that was a sort of 'wider track' very late production CJ5? lots o fun....

'72-'86 CJ's had two widths. Narrow track and wide track. '71 and earlier front axles were approximately 1 1/2" narrower overall than '72 and newer narrow track.

Not saying this is 100% correct , as I just copied this from my old notebook. If it is wrong let me know.

    Front
    D-25 / 27 = 51" WMS
    D-30 Narrow 72-81= 53"
    D-30 Wide 82-86= 56"

    Rear
    D-44 Early narrow through 1975 50.5" WMS
D-44 Wide 1986 = 54.5" WMS at the end of CJ production used up D-44 Wide trac inventorys
D-44 Narrow CJ-7s w.Quadtrac came with 30 spline 1 piece axle offset housings like the 70-71 version.

    AMC-20 76-81 = 50.5"
    AMC-20 82-86 = 54.5" WMS
