Where to start?

    X2 on pull the diff covers. Gaskets for diff are cheap. Lube isn't costly. Plus you'll know if you have anything interesting or surprising in there ( ltd slip, locker, etc.).

    Sounds like you have different gearing for the front axle. Should both turn the same amount when you do that. Don't operate the vehicle in 4wd until you get that sorted out

    Sounds like you have one wheel turning at one axle, and two wheels turning at the other axle.

    Yes. If one wheel is held the other doubles its rotations via the differential gears.

    Not following, Pete.

    Been my experience that the front will turn the same number as the back. Even if some one holds one wheel stationary. I have had the front tires spin in opposite directions if noone holds them.

    Petel is saying on the same axle, I.e. side to side. If you hold one wheel stationary, say the passenger side, the driver side wheel will turn twice as many revolutions with the same number of turns of the driveshaft.

    Now I am going to have to go out and try that. I've only spun them with all four up in the air on jackstands in the garage.

    Verified: 4.27s front and rear. I think what I'm experiencing must have something to do with Pete's observation.

    Yeah, that's a water-oil emulsion. I don't think it would make a noticable change in the axle performance if it's recent. Scrape it out and change the oil a couple of times. If you want to be more thorough, put some solvent in a pump sprayer and rinse it out.

    Both axles, because the other probably looks this way also.

    Might the Tranny/TC be this way also?

    Good point. A change of all the fluids should be routine with any new-to-you vehicle, since you don't know the detailed history.

    roger that - 75W-90 GL5 in the front diff? Straight 30W in the tranny/T-case? Does the Warn overdrive and PTO change the spec? What about the rear? It has the factory limited slip (trac-loc)?

    T90 3 speed/Warn OD
    Dana 18 t/c
    Dana 27 front
    Dana 44 rear

    No 30W in the tranny. Use gear oil, like the diff's. Can you post a pic of the rear diff case? Someone can ID it for you as it could be a Powerlock. Most gear oils have modifiers in it for limited slip. Check the label on the bottle.

    Here is what's inside the rear axle. 21920X is stamped on the side of the LS housing. I'm thinking it's a Powr-Loc from the descriptions I've found. "Two piece case and four-pinion differential, available in Jeeps from 1956 to 1970." (Jeep 4x4 Performance Handbook)

    80-90 GL4 is the spec I use...
