It has been done, but with 74 hp power steering is a heavy parasitic load

Makes a big difference if the manual gear is in good condition and properly adjusted.

I have the manual snaggy swap with e double hole knuckle and one piece tie rods.......even with 33" tires it's great.

I'm gonna throw this out here for people that keep saying the power steering is big parasitic load. The only time the pump is a load is when the wheel is turned under load, otherwise it probably doesn't take a 1/2hp to run it all the time driving down the road.

    nickmil In mothballs.

The biggest issue is fabricating a mount for the pump and matching the belt width. Especially if your F-Head runs the wide belt. Finding pulleys to match can be a challenge. Gotta agree with McRuff here. The load is minimal compared to the benefits.

Ross manual buggy steering to Saginaw Manual steering on a scale of 1-10 is a definite 4-5 upgrade although off-road in mud or rocks & soft dirt you still need to eat your wheaties...........Power Saginaw is a definite 10 of course assuming all other components are in good order and I agree with Mcruff's statement in that there is just a small loss when going straight ahead and another loss when the gear & pump is engaged while turning.

The newer (~2011) Ford trucks use an electric power steering pump that only runs when needed. Has anybody looked into using something like that?

Sometimes I imagine some help to turn the steering wheel. Some electric device could be a good idea.
Just working when the speed is null or very low.
