axle shaft hub question

    when i start moving either in first or reverse i can hear the rear right axleshaft spin and stops on the hub key.
    I took apart the hub cleaned the axleshaft and the hub and tighten the nut back.
    It was not done with a torque wrench but i used a 6 feet pipe until the nut was aligned so i can pass through the hole the pin for the nut.
    Afetr that the hitting on the hub key was reduced and is not that harsh but is still there
    Any suggestions what to do to make it stop permanently.

    Do you have the key installed between the shaft and hub? Is the hub cracked and "skipping" over the key? If the axle is spinning inside the hub there is something damaged, broken, or missing.

    That key should have very close tolerances. Most of the time they come too tight and I file mine a little at a time with a points file to get them to fit 'just right'.

    Otherwise, I agree with Nick - there should be no movement.

    In my experience, once they have slipped and are driven that way, it is almost impossible to keep them tight again because the tapper on the hub and shaft is no longer a real tapper fit. Sort of the same scenerio as messing up a Morris tapper socket on a drill press or mill.

    Another thought - make sure the 'ramp' or 'angle' on the key is installed right and it has the right angle. I had one once that just was not tapered correctly and ruined a hub before we caught it.

    Also, the way I was told to install the key is to put the hub on the axle, align the two slots, slip the key in and install the washer and nut. The key can also develop a groove in it from driving with the nut loose. If your key has a line/groove in it parallel to the slot you should get a new one. You should tighten the nut using a torque wrench. Seem to recall the torque is to 150 ft lbs min. Just going from old memory on that though. I cracked a hub on my old Willys Utility Wagon because the nut was loose. Did you thoroughly inspect the hub for a crack on the inside of the hub slot? If it cracks there you likely never get it tight.
