A Few Questions?

    TwilightTinkerer Just a guy!

I finally got my jeep running and drove it for the first time in 2 yrs, and only those of you who have reached that stage will understand my excitement!!!! :D I sat on a 5 gallon bucket and drove it to the end of the street and back. Now a few odds and ends to figure out....
    #1 my speedo.
I have a new speedo cluster with all lights and gauges working, but the speedometer does not register. New cable and if I turn the cable by hand on the opposite end I can make the needle increase. Do you guys think there is a gear in the transmission to change? If so how difficult is it to change?
    #2 my oil gauge
I have wired all of my gauges and lights and the oil gauge still is giving me a fit. New electronic gauge and EZ wire harness. The needle goes everywhere!!!! It will tick from one side to the other........ARGHHHHHH!!!!! I can not seem to figure it out.
    #3 - SMOKE
My exhaust seems rather smokey. When I get out of the jeep I smell like pure exhaust. I know part of this is from the pipes exiting under the doors on each side which I hope to change soon. My question here is I have a good bit of exhaust that exits from the oil fill tube?? I have been running the 304 with the breather off just to test, and the exhaust seems rather significant coming out of the cap? Is this normal?

I think this will suffice for questions for now. I am sure I will have more later!

    Thanks,

    Lee

I will do my best to answer you questions, but I have no definite answer for any of them. Your speedo, I dont know. getting ready to do the same type thing myself in the spring. Oil Gauge, I have not tried it myself, but have heard that if you put a rubber band around the back of the gauge that it will sometimes steady the needle. exhaust fumes, carb too rich. I have the fender well headers also and had issues with the same thing and just recently got the fumes down. Oil tube, I don't think that is exhaust fumes you are seeing, I believe that is crank case presure ( not possitive about that though) and you may need to replace your pcv valve, or install one if you don't have one. thats about the best I can do for you, hope it helps.

I'll bet if you look inside that speedo output housing on the transfer case and spin the driveshaft (in 2H) You won't see that coupler rotating.Maybe stripped drive gear inside the tailshaft housing.

Does your oil pressure gauge have a new sender that came with it?

I put the side exit headers on My first CJ and the fumes prompted me to do a meticulous rebuild of the carb to cut way down on the noxious gasses.

While I was at it, I put the PCV system back the way it came from the factory. These older engines have a lot of blowby these days and the PCV system can handle all but the worst cases if they are fully functional.

I have a pcv valve installed but it does not connect to the oil cap?
The oil pressure gauge does have a new sender so I think it almost has to be something in my wiring. DREDnot, Is the gear in the tailshaft difficult to change if stripped?

Im not sure about all the jeep engines, but I do know that some engines had the pcv going to the oil tube and others used the valve cover. I believe the other end went to a full vacuum source. You say you have one, so I assume its hooked up correct, you just may have to get a new one. They are very cheap, its been years since I have bought one but I would guess 5-6 dollars maybe. Im pretty sure you can by a oil cap that has a fitting on it for a pcv if you wanted to put it on the cap, Either way does the same thing.

You need two connections for the PCV system. You need a source of clean, filtered air for the crankcase, and you need a connection to manifold vacuum to suck the crankcase vapors away. Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Different engines use different connection schemes, but the function is the same. On the 304, one connection is through the oil fill tube, and the other is from a grommet in the manifold to the base of the carburetor.

Also, wrt 3), you need to do a compression check. Excess blow-by (fumes coming out the oil fill tube) is a sign of a worn engine. The compression check will help to judge how worn the engine is.

For the gauge, first, did you read and follow the installation instructions that came with the gauge? What brand and model of gauge is it? With problems like this, the more specific information you include in your post, the better. But try to keep it pithy.

Thanks! That diagram helped a lot I think mine seems to be hooked correctly and both it and the hose are new. I will get a compression test done and see just how bad the engine is. I have not rebuilt it but may have to.

    1) turn the cable from the speedo head by hand still connected on the trans side will it spin? If so nothing inside the trans to spin it or broken cable.
    2) pull a few plugs look for black shut if so carb is running rich.
    3) oil blow by pull the dip stick engine running what do you see? Use a vacum Gauge at idle what does it read?

just remove all this to get to the drive gear. If just the driven gear is bad, all that needs to come out is the fitting that holds the cable. Can you see where it unscrews there?

Yeah thanks for the picture. I can see the fitting on mine and it looks just like that however, I cannot get anything on it. Any ideas? I tried a deep well socket, box end etc. Going to get back on it tomorrow. That has to be the problem, cable spins free, speedo moves when turning.

you need a thin wall socket. I went though a couple of tools boxes, to find thin wall socket ,that fit. Plus clean ALL dirt off it. So you can get a good grip on it.

I took a cheaper deep well socket and ground the face flat and took off some additional off the walls with a grinder. It is now my permanent D20 speedometer gear socket.

I did exactly the same and it works well. 7/8" iirc

Perfect! That was the answer I was looking for. I tried a couple of different sockets and all seemed to slip I will purchase one today and grind down just for that purpose.
