My three speed trans. has as much side to side play in gear as in neutral, what might be worn out? also , how do I identify what trans this is, the tag # is 999638 and 13-07-012. thanks for any response.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    999638 = T-15
something in the shift tower or shift lever
    worn lug
    worn ball or broken spring
broken roll pin, ball to lever
    housing worn where ball rides

I was going to ask the same question. Mine isn't horrible but I'd like it to be a bit tighter. Never having had a new one, are they ever tight without slop? Also, I've looked at parts diagrams and they are very sketchy on what appears to me to be some the parts mentioned above. Where can one get these items? Sorry if I'm threadjacking.

They are never "tight" like a modern car trans, but there shouldn't be a ton of slop when in gear. Remember, this is a heavy duty truck trans, and smooth fast shifts were not a priority.

Yes, the gate is wide, but the slop should not be as wide as the gate. I'd take the top off and look at the components that jpflat2a points to.

How do I remove the shift rails? I have driven the pins out of shift fork and tried to drive rail toward cap but cap won't move.

Make sure all shift rails are in the neutral position before trying to remove one rail at a time. Watch out for the detent balls they love to fly across the shop

Back in the early 70s I had a 64 Willys truck with a t18 tranny in her ,, sloppy wasnt the word for it ,, I pulled the top off & braised some brass on the shift forks, just some brass rod,, Built it up 3/16 to 1/4 thick & used a 4 in grinder with a sanding pad on it & shaped it down til it fit ,, Worked great ,, Dont know why the t-15 would be able to do the same,, didnt even pull it apart ,,I had a old Part that it rides in from a old rebuild & sanded till it fit good.. Tighting it right up,, I used a tig but a torch would have worked too,,:flag:

the slop in mine appears to be in the ball where the stick goes through, but I still can't get shift rails out. All the caps are removed and rail will slide almost to where the caps are and it feels like it is hitting something , will only go so far and stops. should i get a bigger hammer?

I ran into this same thing when I took mine apart. With the tower upside down and the capped end facing toward you, move the shifter to the right side (with the shifter rods lined up in neutral, unless you removed the shifter) then push the left rod all the way back away from the cap end as far as it will go. There's a pill stop between the two rods just behind where the caps stop when installed.
You should be able to shake the pill out. Then you can slide the left rod all the way out and then move the shifter over (unless you removed it) and slide the other rod out. Remember to put it back together in the reverse order (don't forget the pill)
It took me quite a while to figure it out and then I finally saw the little pill in the FSR manual photo.

thanks for the info. I got both rails out this afternoon, the pins that hold the ball to the shifter have alot of wear on them, any ideas where to get new pins

I was looking for a shifter for my T-14 transmission and it is almost impossible to find one. All the jeep parts places had transmission parts but no tower parts. I looked and looked online but nothing showed up. I went through all the parts places listed on the sticky at the earlycj5.com sight as well as some others and came up with nothing. Maybe somebody here knows some other places to look. Are the holes worn out or just the pins. You might be able to find the right size roll pins at a local auto parts store and cut them to length or drill the holes out to the next size up roll pin. I ran into a local guy that just happened to take his transmission out and replaced it with an automatic trans. He had the shifter I needed.

Herm the Overdrive Guy has used shift towers in good shape if you call and ask him. His price is great as well.

My first thought for repair of the holes in the ball was to drill them out to the next biggest size but is there any reason I can't weld the shifter rod to the ball on the top side? Thanks for all the responses.

I don't see why not. The shifter ball on my T-14 is solid. It's not pinned in.

So Kirk, how'd this work out? Did you make the repairs and where did you get the parts? I'd like to remove the slop from my T-14 too and wonder how you did.

I welded the ball to the stick shifter on the top side in three places and reassembled everything and it took alot of play out the stick. Now I can tell whether it is in neutral or not
