Speedometer cable stripped?

Working out the bugs on the 69 CJ5 I just bought. Speedo doesn't work. I pulled the cable out from the transfer case and spun it. The speedometer worked. Then I looked to see if the gear in the transfer case was turning but sticking a bent q-tip in the hole. As I pushed the jeep the q-tip turned. But when I insert the square end of the cable in nothing happens. It looks a little rounded at the end of the cable but overall it is still square. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I got tired of fighting mine and bought a gps for the speedo and it works great and is very accurate plus you get the benifits fo the gps.

Unscrew the driven gear part out of the transfer and take a look at the nylon gear. While you have it out screw it onto the speedo cable and spin it and see if it moves the speedo needle.

I heard they do not make them for the D 18 or 20 anymore that is why I went with the gps?

I'll pull the gear part out tomorrow night and take a look.

the end of my cable was just a little bit rounded.
that little bit was enough to make it not work.

    nickmil In mothballs.

They don't but if you have the part #'s many of the suppliers like Hermtheoverdriveguy, R&P, etc. have some used ones in stock typically.

Standard Ignition used to sell a kit that made a new core for your speedometer cable. Came with a very long core that you cut to length and an end that you swaged to the cable end using a tool they supplied. Worked well, and better than replacing the whole cable. Lube the new core well, with something light like silicone grease, white grease or petroleum jelly. I presume the kit is still available thorough your FLAPS.

Easiest possible fix and cheapest for that matter is Walck sells a new speedo cable for like $15 I think. He even had it made with the firewall grommet.

Well, it was the cable that was worn from square to round. I bought the core replacement, cut it to size and voila! Let's see how long that crimped end lasts. Here is a picture. Thanks for all the help everyone. Total cost of the fix- $7 plus $2 in simple green cleaning my hands afterwards.

The crimped end will be fine if you lubed the core well. Lots of cars have that fix.
