i have a 74 and was wanting to put it under myn. myn is not the V8 its the straight six. is there any gearing differences or anything i should worry about??

They were all the same Dana 44. Standard axle ratio was 3.73, regardless of engine choice, and 4.27 was optional.

Also, the Trac-lock limited slip differential was a popular option... but it was optional. Could be an open differential or a LSD. There will be a tag on an axle bolt that says to use LS oil only, if a LSD.

The ratio will also be on the tag, or you can read the tooth count on the ring gear, ie 41 11 is 41/11 = 3.73.

If it's a 4.27:1 axle and I had 3.73s, I'd get it anyway and ask the guy about the matching front, look for a 4.27 front axle, or convert my front axle to 4.27s.

I've had three '73, CJ-5 Jeeps all with 4.10:1 from the factory.
All three were 'Government' issue, so that might have something to do with it.

One was military (Navy) and two were state Yellow under the hood when I got them.

All were 304 V-8 from the factory, so maybe that had something to do with it...

It simply has the ring gear number and the pinion number. Divide and it gives you the numerical ratio. If you are buying a axle it is always best to pull the cover and visually verify what is inside.

Most of the tags I've seen have a Jeep PN, the tooth count and the ratio 4.27 or 3.73. There will be a second smaller tag saying to use special oil if it's a LSD.

If it were me, I'd pull the cover and check...especially if it's only 30 bucks...you might end up being the guys trash pickup if it's shot. Good luck.

For 30$ pick it up. The axle shafts and 11" brake backing plates are worth more than that.

alright so i picked up the axle.the tag said had the words limited slip on it so i figure its is. i would think if it wasnt it wouldnt say anything like that on it. but anyhow i cracked it open...says 41 11 so i guess its 3.73 gearing...which will work for me.

there was a little sludge and what not in there. i want to flush it and put new fluid in it. can i flush it with brake cleaner?? or carb cleaner??

and what goes back in there?? 80w-90??

    thanks, Matt

What Hawkes said. Don't use carb cleaner as it can attack the clutch plates, use spray brake cleaner. That is a Trac-loc limited slip. you will need to add friction modifier to the gear oil which is available at most flaps (friendly local auto parts stores).

    cool deal,

now there was quite a bit of sludge at the bottom of the diff. was wondering
if i should clean it more thoroughly than just brake cleaner-ing what i can. cause when i cleaned it for the first time i used one full can of brake cleaner to clean most of the inside of the diff or what i cold spray, and there was still a kind of sludge like goo on the bottom that i kinda of scooped out with my finger.....

so i was thinking that maybe i should clean the bearings or the internals more thoroughly..... maybe take the ring gear and assembly out or something???

    just thinking....??

    thanks, MAtt

The sludge is probably friction material worn off the clutch plates. I'd wipe out the accessible part of the pumpkin with some solvent and close it up. Then I'd change the oil a time or two after some driving.

The Trac-lock wears out pretty quickly - you may want to put new clutches in it while it's on the shop floor. Randy's Ring&Pinion has some tips on their web page as I recall. http://www.ringpinion.com/PartsHelp.aspx
