I don't think it's a '71 model. I don't think anyone established that at all. It was built in June or July of '70 which would be a 1970 model year run. As stated above, the changeover doesn't occur until Sep./Oct.

If it were a '71 the chances of it being originally purple drop, greatly.

If you plan to refurbish it, I'd be sure and do it as an original RI as much as possible, keep the Buick V8 though. That's just plain 8).

That's pretty cool, if you're repainting I'd go with the original shade and replace all the decals. Usually I wouldn't go with a purple vehicle, but I think this is an exception. There aren't too many Renegade I's floating around, it that's one of them you've got quite a find.

The easy way to tell if it is a Buick 350 compared to a Buick 300 or 340 is the timing cover. The 300 and 340 are missing 2 bolts that the later 225's and the 350 have.
This is an early Dauntless timing cover that would fit a 300 or 340 v8.

On a later 225 cover from about 70? on there would be 2 more bolts, they would be located on the outside of the water passage ears. The 350 will also have these the 300, 340 motors do not have them if they have the original timing covers. Here is a later cover to compare it to.

Absolutely! It could matter a lot. A Ren 1 or Ren 2 is very collectible. Even though it's not entirely original, it will be worth more as a Renegade than not. Read the Renegade page that Sparky linked to above.

    What's the xxx in xxx937?

I'm trying to figure out what month it was built, not having the whole number makes it difficult. I can guess that they're 367 possibly so built around September or October of 1970? That would make it a '71 model year Jeep. The one in question that started this thread would not be.

I've not heard of a '71 built later than November that was painted Purple. Does yours have the Renegade I characteristics as well?

Can't see it real good, but does not look like a standard RR1 decal to me, not sure I have ever seen a decal like that.

372? Feb. of '71? If so that's certainly interesting. So is it a Renegade II or just a purple CJ-5?

Looks more like a later Renegade decal to me as well.

But the ad clearly shows the gages: [IMG]

This Jeep looks familiar to me for some reason. :?

AHHHH, TXJake, didn't you look at this Jeep? It had a Buick 350 in it, etc.

Ahh, I thought you said "your" VIN, indicating the VIN of my Jeep.

So yours is a '70 model titled as a '71 as well, built in June of 1970.

Is it a Renegade I too? Guessing by the purple paint, do you have the optional gauges, and the wiring harness differences, etc?

See the pic that I just posted above. Two gauges to the left of the steering wheel. Read the Renegade Page in the technical library, http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/general/Renegade/index.php

Refer to my previous post above, often Jeeps were titled for the model year they were sold, not the model year for which they were made. :)

I know it's been determined no tailgate on the Ren II, what about the Ren I? The info page used to say no tailgate on the Ren II, but I don't see it anymore.

Sorry, didn't read the whole line on Ren II.

Fixed rear mount spare with a fixed panel tub, no tail gate

If you read the page it has pictures of the swing away tire carrier and tailgate assembly and mentions this for the Renegade I.

I've not changed the page's information concerning the Renegade II package either.

Gauges and oil pan skid and purple? I'd say yes, it's a Renegade I.

As for the lights in the speedometer, don't forget these were very low production vehicles. I find it very doubtful that Jeep would have used a specific speedometer in them. In fact I've never thought about it, but I've never heard of one that was.

We could ask Beeser, WYOMIKE or one of the other owners of an original Renegade I or II if their speedometer is any different.
