Axle poll

    Which is betterto install in a 1956 cj5? Dana 44 center diff. or amc 20?

    Neither, an off-set flanged 44.

    We need more information, I see you've not filled in the information about your Jeep in your profile and didn't tell us what transfer case you're using.

    Until then I'd have to say an offset flanged 44 since that's what works with the D18.

    Sorry about not enough info. Here it is 327 chevy, 700r4 trans, gm transfer case.

    I've always been a fan of Dana.. so I'd go with a dana 44.. I think they would be more parts avaliable for the 44 than the amc20.. unless you are thinking narrow track dana centered dana 44 out of a cj5 or a rare cj7 d44. Shafts may be harder to come by. Also the cj amc20 axles were c- clip axles correct ?

    If you're talking about factory narrow width axles..the Dana would be stronger and have more aftermarket support. AMC 20's have weak tubes a they're not flanged axles.

    Personally, I would go with a 31 spline Ford 9". You could use it "as is" if you're going full width or they're easy to cut down and narrow. Strong as hell (sounds like you got a powerful drivetrain), 5 on 5.5 lug so it matches, and the aftermarket is like utopia for them!
    But, thats just my .02...I know you asked about the other two axles!

    Intermediate CJ Flanged 44 in that case.

    Spring pads will be correct sizes and locations among other things.

    ...not afraid of the AMC 20 they are usually priced right 'cause people think they are no good. Used them with and without aftermarket axles. You have to keep the axle nut at proper tightness. I buy the Quadra-trac model when I come across them. I wouldn't swap them in place of a flanged 44 but have and will continue for the others. Of course YMMV...........

    Dana 44. The AMC 20 has weak tubes and 2 piece axles. Seen waaaayyyyyy too many of the housing bend, even after being trussed. The 44 has a LOT of after market support. I like the 9" but not in a Jeep. Pinion hangs too low in a short wheel base. Nickmil
