I just looked at the photos on the Jeepforum.com swingout tire carrier thread. I had thought there was a padlock hole but there isn't. My bad. I'm going to fab up my own bolt/lock, something like a "T" handle but I'll have to see what i have lying around when I get to that part. I've been known to use things like broken piston rods to other purposes. :smash:

I'd be a little worried about those clamps not holding when bouncing down some rough trail or pot-holed street. Having said that, you should know that I sometimes worry about the wrong things. :)

After some research I think I'm going to buy the destaco clamp # 225-UR http://www.smallparts.com/products/destaco/tlclamps225.cfm
It locks so it will not vibbrate loose. I think I can design a way to pad lock if needed and I think the price is reasonable $21.50. Just an update of what I have found.

I intend to copy your carrier. Good work and thanks for testing the 1.75. What gauge did you use? Have driven much with weight on it yet?

I think it was 1/8in thick. I took it on a trip last night over some bumpy dirt roads and the high lift jack base rattles. I am going to try and bungee or remove it. No other rattles. I'd like to see pics as you build your tire carrier.

I like the 225 because it has a latch that locks to keep it closed' also it has a 1/3 more holding power. I'll post pics when I get the bumper made.

I think those are supposed to rattle. Congrats.

As I started to think about the mounting bracket (Bumper to frame) I started to use 3" channel but I'm wondering if that is to strong? Should there be a "weak link" so if I take a rear hit something will bend before the frame?
