Who's got a turbo 350 and Dauntless V6 in their flattie?

    I wont bother everyone with my questions but i am looking for someone in this forum who has done that exact swap into their flattie. I would like to PM a few questions as this is my longterm plan for my jeep :) (with stock 18 transfer case).
    I just found a great deal on a running 225 with headers locally, and i think i might snap it up...

    was that they guy with the insane rockcrawler that he parted out like 2 or 3 months ago? I think his flattie was stretched and painted green if memory serves... I was trying to remember what the link was to his personal webpage.

    Hey Any,
    I have a short shaft turbo 350 from a'73 Caprice . (If your interested. ) I realize that you are a long ways from Virginia, ....but....I've got a good one. That's a swell combo with the 225 by the way.

    Thanks Pete, but i think it would be too much hassle to ship something that heavy... they guy that has the 225 up here for me also has the TH350 with the BOP bellhousing pattern so i think im pretty well set if i decide to move forward with this... :)

    I have a 225 with a bop 350 and a AA adapter to the 18 with a warn overdrive.(I think that is whats in it) I bought it for a project and haven't done anything with it but it drives nice. The po did a hatchet job on the tranny pan, and that needs to be fixed. My daily driver is a 3-b with a 231 and a 400 turbo and a 20 t-case, I have had this combo in several flatties and like it the best. With all the traffic around here a stick is to much of a workout on the knees.

    yeah thats one of my reasons... i just had knee surgery a couple months back. Almost 100% but i know my knee will never be as strong as it was. I almost sold my flattie but i just love it too damn much so i would rather convert it to auto with a V6 :)
    any Advice Daryl? is your 225/350 a runner?

    ok thanks :) here goes...

    theres gotta be an adapter to mate the 18 t-case to the th350 so im not worried about that... and i know that a TH350 with the BOP bellhousing will connect great with the V6. Here are some of my main concerns:

    Driveshaft length: will i have to mess around with my driveshafts? This drivetrain setup is probably longer than stock so will i need to shorten at least the rear shaft? Or will i just move the engine forward?

    Exhaust: i want to use headers and would prefer not to have to hack through my fenderwells... can i get the exhaust tucked in without having to do that? i know that i will have to do a saginaw swap for steering clearance... thats not a problem.

    electrical: can i get away with using the wiring thats already there? i am definitely not qualified to re-wire a jeep and i dont want to mess it up.

    thats all i can think of for now... im sure i will think of more once we really get into it :)

    of the three questions you ask, the electrical will be the easiest.

    Don't let driveshaft length dictate the position of the engine/trans; it's almost a given that d/shaft mods will be needed. After the engine/trans/t-case are properly positioned, you can then do the shaft mods. Keep in mind front d/shaft clearance for the starter/trans oil pan area.

    If you feel you need to move engine/trans forward, some folks eliminate the large tube type front crossmember and replace it with a smaller rectangular tube type crossmember. This gives more clearance for radiator/cooling issues.

    The steering swap should be mocked up, as well as the motor mounts, and everything double checked for clearance issues before final weld in.

    The headers and exhaust are all kinda done at the same time. I used AA V/6 headers made for flatties in my conversion; I didn't have to hack the fenders as they exit outside the frame.

    The ket to success is measure twice, cut/weld only once.

    yeah i found it last night. After a closer look i found that his setup is significantly different from what i want to do. there are similarities however.

    I was in email contact with him a couple months back and i was absolutely heartbroken to hear that he parted out that jeep :(

    The wiring on early CJ's is VERY simple, even with the engine transplant. The hardest job will be to properly install the alternator, and that can be simplified by switching to a GM style. Personally, anyone who can do the drivetrain fabbing you describe will have no problem with the wiring. If you want to reuse the existing loom, be sure to check the insulation for servicability. Older weaved coverings are prone to hardening and cracking, causing it to fall off the wire. This can cause some exitement after a long day of banging around.
