Hey guys, I don't know much about Toyota truck transmissions and transfer cases, but I see them for sale cheap pretty regularly. How strong are they? What gear ratios are they? Are some variations better than others? I would be looking to put it behind the 225 in Farm Jeep Willy.

The later ones are plenty strong enough for a 225 (Rough guess, say about 1983 and up), I know a couple guys that have done complete Toyota drivetrain swaps into YJ's.

I have *no* idea about the bellhousing/starter/clutch adapter would work though, I don't think I've ever seen one hooked up to a BOP or SBC bellhousing pattern.

I would check the length before buying. The 5 speeds are pretty long to fit in a short wheelbase Jeep.

The CJ6 has plenty of room for a long combo.

Possibly a CJ7 would work with that combo and correct axles. I seem to remember early Toyota and Datsuns that were
initially conversions to Dana 30 because it was not a Japan option.

With all the towing and truck type stuff you use your jeep for, a NV4500 makes more sense to me.

You are correct. I'm just trying to think outside the box a bit (difficult for this guy) and possibly make it lighter. NV4500s also seem to bring insane prices around here. It really is probably the best choice though.

The R- series (151, etc) hood up well but not sure I’d want to tow with them much. They are the same strength as an AX-15, in fact some parts interchange. Forget the G series, too old and hard to get parts for, and not all that strong. The W series are ok in a lightweight vehicle but weaker than the R series. I would be even less inclined to tow or haul heavy loads with it. These are all basically car transmissions used in 2 wd trucks or modified for a transfer case.
The biggest thing is how to adapt one to a Buick V-6. There used to be Chevrolet adapters available.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that for what I do, the SM465 or an NV4500 really are my only options if I keep towing like I do. I know that even when I have a bigger truck on the road, I still use the Jeep more often.

The Ford ZF-5 and ZF-6 manuals are great too, but not sure about adapting to a 225 since they have the belhousings cast as part of the case. It really seems like an NV4500 is the way to go.
