So I have made some progress on both of them over the summer.
Orange R1 has got a new (walack's) wiring harness installed. When I tried to request the oil and amp gauges be added to the harness being ordered I kind of hit a roadblock with getting one built. So I opted for a regular harness and will add the extra wiring after I document how the Yellow R2 is wired. But the R1 is close to being buttoned back up so it can be driven again.

I decided to pull the tub on the yellow R2 as is was just sitting on the frame unbolted anyway. I have cleaned and painted the frame removed the motor/trans/ transfer case and cracked them open for inspection. The transfer case looked real good and was clean. So on to the transmission! When I cracked it open I found a bit of standing water and a rusty colored goo for lubricant! So I cleaned it out and it got sealed back up and on to the engine prep.
I pulled the 2G carb and rebuilt it, pulled the fuel pump and it was toast so while it was off I noticed that it still had the Teflon upper timing gear in place so the pan and timing cover came off and a new timing chain, sprockets and tensioners were added I also visually inspected the bottom end while the pan was off and it all looked clean and good.

I have cleaned and painted the motor, trans, and transfer case and bolted them back together and placed back into the frame and prepared to fire it up to see if what I have is worth running it like it is.
This motor has the Prestolite dizzy in it and I am not a fan, but it works for now until a correct delco unit can be found to replace it.

I did fire it up and it runs pretty well, it holds 40lbs hot idle with a new mechanical gauge, no funny noises, and most importantly it doesn't smoke! Every dauntless I own with the exception of this one puffs or blows blue smoke.

So on to the brakes and brake system and fuel system before I drop the tub back on the frame.

I have also broke out the rubbing compound and buffer and started buffing the Orange back to life.

I've been thinking about painting my TJ orange, do you know the paint code of your Jeep ?

Why did they actually say "Renegade I" on the decal? Did they anticipate a Renegade II?

The code on this one is 999 per the tag on the firewall. But both my yellow and orange one have the same tag as they are both Renegades.

I understand it is a 1971 AMC big bad orange color.

I have wondered that question myself.

Could be Riverside Orange. Even though this chart indicates 1972, I think the 999 colors are actually the early Renegade colors.

I think that's right - IIRC the '71 colors carried over to '72, and they were named after off-road racing events, including the Mint 400 and the Baja races ... except for Plum Poly (?) and Sierra Blue (?). I have seen a Sierra blue Ren II, but not a '72. I've definitely seen the other colors in '72 Jeeps - the orange was very popular. Riverside was the "SCORE Off-Road World Championship" at Riverside International Raceway, now part of the Mareno Mall parking lot and other development Riverside International Raceway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
