I still have the old cardboard glove box liner, but it looks like there ought to be a stop or something in the hole, for the hook to come up against....

Anyone have an idea or a picture?

Click on the thumbnail for more pictures of the liner...

    Thanks, Randy

never seen a hook on glove box door . so I would say PO added it

My '61 had one and I have no reason to believe it was added by a PO. I removed it when I installed a new aftermarket plastic glove box. Before I removed the "hook latch" I used a small rubber nipple in the screw hole to catch the latch. I believe I got the part at the hardware store. Just checked and I have the "hook latch" stored in the glove box, no sign of the nipple.
    Hope this helps.

My 65 Tux had the same thing. IIRC there was a bolt or something sticking out that it rode on and the hook caught it and held the door horizontal.

As I looked at this photo I remember cutting the slot in the plastic aftermarket glove box. The photo shows the washer that keeps the arm on track.

Nope, they're factory- had one in a '59 CJ6 I had & Tonk has the mounting studs on the door for one. Unfortunately whatever went into that hole in the side of the box opening was gone from the 6. From the parts manual I suspect it's a 3/4" pan head screw with a spacer to hold it out far enough. The parts manual calls the hook a "retaining arm".

They must have deleted them from the build sheet at some point because my 71 never had it.

    Thanks everybody for the response!

I like Mark's picture of the 65 Tux.....looks like a spacer and a washer....but maybe someone will have a more detailed picture?

The sad thing is I probably took it apart and lost it when we painted it green.... that was probably in about '73....

Very early CJ's had that arm but later did not. My original '57 does. My '59 did not but was not original. The Daughter's '69/'70 did not and had original glove box parts. I still have an original door in storage with the stud, arm, latch, etc.

  11. The 67 I am working on has one. I'll take a picture and post it tomorrow but basically its a screw with a spacer and a large washer. Not sure if that was factory or not but it looks as though it could be based on the picture above.

As far as the cardboard box, mine was junk. I made a new box out of aluminum with pop rivets, made it longer as there is a lot of unused room between the box and the firewall. I used a 66 door with a lock, it had the stop on it.

For my DJ project, I pulled the door and all hardware for the glove box off a 57 Willys PU at the picknpull. It had the hook. And the brass data plate.

I fabricated a box for it- just the floor and side toward the driver. The rest of the box is the cowling and firewall. Makes for a huge glove box area. Never hurts to have more storage space on a jeep.

It's easy enough to use a bolt for the hook to catch on. Experiment with it to get the right location for the bolt. I made the dash, so could put the bolt hole wherever I wanted.
