Replacing the rear pinion yoke shaft

Ok, one more question. If I'm going to be using the PVC pipe method for driving the oil seal into place, do I get a pipe for the diameter of the raised inner part of the seal, or the lower outer part of the seal? I was a little surprised to see that it has two areas in two different sizes.

The seal driver should be the diameter of the outer part of the seal. If the PVC is a little too large, you can cut a slot down one side of the pvc, and use a large hose clamp to reduce the diameter.

Did you remove the center nut off yet?

Not yet. I'm not going to be able to get it off until Tuesday at the earliest, probably Wednesday. I asked because there's a good plumbing supply store and I was thinking about getting some of the right diameter pipe here.

this is good info since i completely destroyed my diff, replacing it with a limited slip and the ring and pinion, so would the dana 44 have a crush sleeve... and would a crush sleeve from a newer dana 44 work?

Far as I can tell, the crush sleeve thing doesn't apply to the D44 you find in early CJs. Must've been an AMC 20 thing.

Correct. And some late model Dana 44's, 30's, and some Dana 60's.
doesn't apply to any CJ based axle except the AMC 20

No, you are not. The crush sleeve let the OEM' speed up assembly of the diffs since they could just crush down to get correct pinion bearing pre-load without disassembly. You can replace a pinion seal on a crush sleeve equipped diff regardless of what internet pundits say.

You really need to ger a FSM (Factory Service Manual) to get all of the ins and outs of diff R&R. If you don't have one, it more than makes itself valuable if you are going to work on your jeep yourself!

Randy Lyman (of Randy's Ring & Pinion) and Jim Allen (well know off-road writer) teamed up to write a book that has most info for all diffs in it. It's also worth it's $ if you even do 2 different diffs. http://www.amazon.com/Differentials-Identification-Restoration-Jim-Allen/dp/1424326613
