Passenger Seat Latch Ideas?

IMHO this is as secure as the OE type latch would be. There is more movement in the slop of the front hinges than at the back of the seat when latched.

I see you point Jim, but with a 3-point harness with the inertia-locking mechanisms like Mike is using it's sort of a moot point I think. In a collision the whole point is to take up any slack in the restraint system before the impact.

Ah - I was thinking Jim meant when the seat was empty. Thinking on it just now I know the weak spot in this setup - at least on the newer tie downs. It's where the head of the tiedown gets riveted to the shaft. I had used some on my old one pc. front clip and popped the heads off under stress when the Jeep was crossed up.

This is an older tiedown so might be higher quality but I'll take a look and maybe do a spot-weld on it just to be sure.

But overall it seems quite tight and secure - I can't imagine it failing under just a sudden stop with no impact. Of the 4 different ideas I had for a latch it's by far the best all-around -- tight, with tension, still allowing for some movement, easy to hook and unhook, plus uses a Jeep part.

Great idea with the hood hold down. I may co-op that at some point!

You know, thinking on it a little and seeing your hoodlatch in a picture, I would almost bet the latch setup for the windshield would work or something like it but stronger. just an idea. I don't have carpet in mine so can go with a wider variety of latches. :)

Old thread and link is not working for the photos of the original latch.

Does anyone has a picture of the original latch. My girlfriend's 73 CJ5 came without it. I like all the ideas here but will like to see the original if possible.

    Thanks!

The passenger seat latch is identical to the windshield latch on both my 66 and 69 jeep.

The latch is the same one you see on top of the windshield frame that holds back the hood.

A heads up, intermediate CJ's ('72-'75) had a completely different latch mechanism for the passenger seat than Early's (71-older)
Intermediate latches were part of the seat. An earlier one can be retrofitted. It is not correct if you are trying to keep it stock. You might post this in the Intermediates section for info more pertinent to your year of Jeep. That's why it's there ;).

Thanks, I searched there also but couldn’t find an answer but I actually think that my 73 has early seats because there are no latches on the seat anywhere.
