windshield rests

The black rubber/plastic material on my windshield rests need replacing. I want to keep the original rests, but need to replace the black rubber/plastic material. Any ideas on the replacement?

Yea try some of the rubber dip (plasti-dip) that you put on tools, you can buy it in black and then that way you can use it on your tools when you buy it and get more use out of without letting ait sit and go bad.

 

I tried that but was unhappy with the results. I'd recommend a piece of tubing flattened and riveted in place.

 

I believe that the OEM material was the same welting that pads the hood on the grill. I was given a welting kit for M38A1. Nice precut material held in place with brass rivets. Works well. I would try Walcks. I will shot a pcx if you are interested. AM

I went to a fabric store and bought about 3 feet of webbing material. Used the copper brads (can find them in school supplies) to hold the webbing material to the metal windshield rest.

I am thinking about using a black rubber bunge cord on another jeep I am redoing. Will cut the rubber strip to the length of the metal rest. And using a small machine screws that is filed down flatto attache it. The screw would need to tight enough to recess the screw head below the surface of the rubber to avoid scratching the hood.

 

Another trick you can do is to use the rubber like Cliff mentioned above, glue it on and get some 1" or so shrink wrap from Radio Shack and slip it on and shrink it. Seen it done, works great and is easilly replaceable.

 

I think half the guys are talking about the rests that attach to the hood, and the ohter half talking about the rests that attach to the windshield frame. R)
kcjeep: do the windshield rests in question attach to the windshield frame or the hood?

I'm guessing the hood cuz it's a '69. Should have lower mounted wipers, thus no big 'ol handle-lookin' rests that'd cover top-mounted wipers.

 

Thanks for all the information. The rests I'm refering to are the ones on the hood, not the windshield frame. I would like to reuse the originals, but might have to get a pair from some other source. Thanks!

 

Oh for some reason I thought you needed the ones on the windshield.

How about a small vacuum hose. You would only need a few inches. Probably could cut a few inches off the hose on one of your cars windshield washer fluid reservoir :&gt Slit it length -wise and slip it over the horseshoe shaped windshield rest. It really does not have to make the whole U shape. Just the part that the windshield rest against. If it looks ok, do like Jim mentioned and put some super glue on it.
