I believe that is for the generator that was available on the M38A1

The military mounted a power socket in that hole on the M38A1.
I think they used the power socket to supply starting power to aircraft.
I dont think the Early CJ5's had that hole.

As Grinsha said, that's an M38A1....a sweet vintage military Jeep!

Here's a couple of pics. First is similar to the one you posted. The 2nd is what else your buddy should have--hinged grille and recessed parking lights. HTH.

Grill is only hinged on early A1's later ones are fixed they have the same radiator supports that 5's do.

Also later A1's have the same cover over the front fender seam that the 5's do. Prior to that they do not. Coincides with the grill IIRC.

Since I see the cover and it's listed as a 55 I'm surmising the grill isn't hinged. But he will have a removeable battery box cover. No glove box on the passenger side due to the bat box but one on the driver's side.

They started tanks with them also. I bought the heavy duty cables and connectors at a bus depot that had lots of jeep parts years ago. I posted a picture on G503 and that's what I was told they were used for. I sold them off cause my garage isn't tank friendly!
