Whats this thing??

    While I was messing with the flattie today I noticed this thing that came out of the exaust manifold. What does it do??? It swivells back and forth...

    should help heat up the intake when everything starts up... heat riser if i'm remembering the term correctly.

    Correct, there is a little coiled up spring on the other side of that disk. The shaft has a valve flap in side the mainfold that heats up the chamber below the intake/carb area.

    Well ya learn something new everyday. I've heard people talk about the heat riser but I didnt really have any idea what it was. :oops: :oops:

    The spring is broken on 99% of the old jeeps I've seen. I got the kit and rebuilt mine when I did the engine and it works really well! It helps to warm the base of the carb when it's really cold out, to help alleviate the stumbling and such.

    how would you check the spring?? When I turned it by hand, it would turn back a little on its own, but not all the way.

    When cold, the spring should hold the weight in the down position, and the flap inside is closed. As the spring warms up, it will expand and gradually lift the weight upward, opening the flap with it. Once up to temp, the weight / flap will be wide open for max efficiency.

    Clear as mud?

    Yep. I'll check it out tommorow and see if it moves any when its warmed up. Thanks for the help :beer:
