Hi everyone, I'm George and Im a bit stressed out at the moment over a 'Swiss' jeep.
    A guy is selling a CJ5 which he thought was a M38a1.
Some details weren't right like the gas filler was at the rear, lights and the glovebox etc.
I asked him a few questions and he has a document showing it was imported to the Netherlands as a CJ5 from Switzerland in 1994 by Altman, a military jeep importer.
I know the Swiss used part militarised CJ5's and this jeep is 24 volt.
Where the canvas joins the winscreen is the standard fitting but the Swiss used some other design.
    The serial number starts 83050142721xx.
The date of manufacturing is 1970.
    Any help would be appreciated.
In the past Ive owned British army Lightweight Landrovers, series 3 LWB, and a Hotchkiss M201.
    Cheers,
    George

Well, gas tank under the rear floor is consistent with a 1970 model civilian Jeep. AFAIK "M38A1" is a designation for a military model that ended in 1957. We have a sticky thread with VIN information !! See this thread for Serial Number or VIN questions !! | EarlyCJ5.com The number you post indicates an open body left-hand drive CJ-5 with a non-emissions F134 engine. That document can also give you an idea of production date from the sequential serial number.

To me, all evidence points to a militarized 1970 CJ-5 sold to the Swiss government.

Thanks, Timgr, that's a great help, I'll check out the VIN page.
I should now remember my manners and go to your intro page.
