What Axle? What Brakes?

Need another Idea!! I got the brakes you suggested and NO GO!! (too small) I have no idea where to go from here. I've looked at brake calipers from every CJ Napa can find. I'm fixing to put the damn D27 back on this thing! Someone please give me an idea.

 

Sorry this is giving you so much trouble. I have the same axle - I too have had it about ten years but never installed it. Mine came missing the caliper mount and bracket on one side so I had purchased a used pair of calipers and mounts off of ebay. I just went and dug these out to have a look. There is some caliper hardware that installs between the caliper and the mounting bracket that will take up the space between the caliper and mount - about 1/4". The hardware is then secured with a small bolt into the top of the caliper mount - could you be missing this hardware? A quick look into the 4wd Hardware catalog shows the hardware as part no. OAI16748.02 and the bolt as OAI16749.01. If you want to pm me your number I could try to text you a picture of what I have. Good Luck

I'm still missing the bolt that holds the hardware kit to the bracket I think. Is that some special bolt or standard hardware store type?

I replied in post #18 that your axle is from a 1980 CJ5/CJ7 according to your BOM you posted.
I just went outside to get the part number on my caliper, and it is Bendix 8365 cast in for the passenger side. Keep in mind, these calipers slide in to a groove in the bracket rather than "dropping" is as your 3rd photo in post#1 shows.

Thanks Donny, I think I got all that. Did your system need the "hardware kit" referenced above? I'm pretty sure that is my missing link!!

 

My caliper has Ford cast into it.

 

Mine is still fully assembled on the axle. I haven't replaced anything yet, so haven't disassembled it yet. By hardware, are you referring to the two bolts that fasten the C bracket to the knuckle? Mine has two 3/4" hex head bolts that should be readilly available from a fastner supply, though I would make sure they are grade 8 bolts (six hashmarks on the head).

I was looking at the replacement rotors and they come with this kit....calipers don't, I think this is why none of the calipers fit.

 

Yep, you need that, othwise the calipers are a loose fit in the bracket.
