V-6 Starter Woes

    Hope this isn't a topic like knuckle grease - but I've finally been able to drive the Jeep daily - but now sometimes when I go to start it there is nothing - the amp guage shows a draw. When I tap on the starter with a hammer it usually goes. This starter was new 2 years ago. I'm wondering if the celenoid is sticking due to lack of use. Any easy fixes? Any way to lube the plunger on celenoid? Thanks in advance. Dan

    Are you sure the connections are CLEAN and tight? a bad or dirty/corroded connection will cause alot of voltage drop. Just an easy thing to check for. If its only 2 years old, it shouldn't be that dirty... was the solinoid replaces 2 years ago also?

    Umm Brian, Dan's Jeep is perfect in every way. I vote defective starter.

    It's a rebuilt starter (swap thing). Guess I need to pull it and have a looksee.

    I will check the connections before - could be loose?

    a flat spot in the amaturer will cause what you are experiencing. replace the starter or turn the armature and add new brushes.....good luck

    I once had a starter housing come loose and caused a bind.

    Couldn't heart to check. ;)

    Speaking of connections, clean the ones on your battery. Also Scott mentioned the stater housing. Is is making a good ground to where it is connected to the starter. It might have some oil or gunk on it to keep from making a good ground. Take it loose and wire brush the area of contact to insure it has a good ground.

    I bet (and hope) it is something very minor. In the mean time, park on a hill and let it roll just a bit and pop the clutch.

    Just ment that its easy for a battery or starter wire connection to corrode over 2 years, especially if it doesn't get run much.

    After reading it again, my dad had this problem with his case tractor. I know he finally replaced the starter, but that thing was almost 20 years old. Same problem though. sometimes it would run, others a tap was needed. Wish I knew why it needed replacing though.
