That's exactly what I thought too... I figured I could just tap the wire going to grill lights with the wire going to the fender light and it would work. But it doesn't, it screws everything up. All of a sudden all the lights start blinking when you turn on either signal. It's almost like it back-feeds ALL the front lights when you do that.

You might try wiring your lights in this manner. Both lamps will be on when the headlight switch is in the park position. Also, both lamps will flash in an alternating manner when the turn indicator is activated. If the headlight switch is off, only the turn indicator lamp will flash. Of course each side is wired independant of the other side (ie. left side or right side).

Back feeding is what it is doing. You need to check your fender light for a good ground and then what you are trying to do will work.

    Hello everyone,
I thing I can continue this old post as the situation with my Sparton turn signal is similar to what pgte3 mentioned initially:

Here what’s happening. All directional’s work, all hazards work, brake lights work (during turn signal use and not). What does not work is the lights on the turn signal itself. They should light up depending on the directional setting (or hazard setting). I have tried two separate turn signal units, same results. The unit its self reads continuity to ground.

In my case everything works well except that the bulb in the turn signal keeps on. When the turn signal is activated, the bulb flashes accordingly (I read 11.7v with a multimeter on the bulb socket). When the turn signal lever is in the centered position (off) the bulb keeps on but with much lower intensity (I read 8.1v with a multimeter on the bulb socket).
I understand there is something related to resistance and amps. Voltage should drop much more so the bulb doesn't turn on). I am using a 15amp fuse.

    Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks and regards
    Chris

I just installed this a few weeks ago. The (pilot) light is optional, but if desired it goes to ground. It does call for a 3 prong flasher. Since I use the signals in the speedo guage, I left it off. Don't like seeing too many blinking lights.

Chris the indicator light in the Sparton which is that very small black wire in the signal wire loom goes to the P terminal on the 3 prong flasher. The Sparton housing requires a ground to the steering column or run a separate ground wire elsewhere.

Thanks Walt and Hooliganrick for your comments. It ended up being a faulty flasher. I’ve got a new Novita EL13 flasher and it works like a charm. I did take care of having very good ground on the switch to the steering column.

    Cheers,
    Chris

A short test drive last night and it works perfectly. This Sparton has the self cancelling wheel and it also works fine. I am very happy.
This is my recently restores 1956 CJ3B. I will shot a nice photo session shortly.
    Thank you
