Tranny question t90 jb

    I have a chance to pick up an extra motor with a t90 jb transmission attached to it. From talking to the guy, he states that the shifter seems to come out of the side of the trans and not the top. He descibed that on the top was an oval cover with three louvers in it.

    The guy also said that the motor had "Hurricane" stamped on it and it was a six cylinder motor. It also has an OD unit attached.

    The guy wants a whopping $50 for the whole motor , trans. od unit.

    He has no idea what it came out of.

    Does anybody know if the T90 in my 1960 CJ 5 is the same internally? Can the shifters be changed over? Am I mistaken in the belief that mine is a top shifter and maybe it is shifted by a linkage?

    I haven't really looked at it or had it out. Any help would be appreciated--Rob

    It probably came out of a 2wd Willys wagon, with a column shift. As far as internals I'm not really sure. I'm sure your CJ5 is a top shifter, unless you have a column shift CJ? The 6 cylinder Hurricane is called the Super Hurricane, for example as noted in my signature.

    That's kind of what I came up with after researching it quite a bit last night.

    Too bad you're so far away, as it would be a great deal for somebody who could use the engine parts. I wonder if the od unit would work for me as a spare.--Rob

    OD is probably a borg-warner unit that mounts on the output shaft of the transfer case rather than the pto cover. good in 2WD only.

    According to my manual the transmission with o/d hooked to it would be a T86, not a T90. Also FWIW, the Super Hurricane is a 226 ci flathead, with Super Hurricane cast into the head.

    Herm - www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com could tell you about the shifters. One more thing though - a pick-up/wagon t-90 will be a longshaft t90 that would be what you would need to convert from an f-head to a buick v6.

    Well It sounds like it won't suit my needs. If anybody wants the sellers phone number let me know. He is located in the San francisco Bay Area. I don't know if he will ship though.
