    And yet, new alternators can get fried just charging a dead battery.

    Sorry Pete, I didn't mean to imply one is better than another, only with my limited ability to restore an old generator. Here in my area of the high desert of NM you can drive farther in an hour than walk back in two days. I opted to go with an alternator kit instead.

    Hey, it is your Jeep to enjoy as you prefer. Good luck with whatever you choose.

    I am just an advocate for preserving early jeeps in 'stock' condition as much as possible. Modifying them is a lot easier than restoring them.

    I agree, I'm keeping the old genny & will continue to track down the needed parts to restore it properly, in the mean time I'll use the alternator. So far the only mods I've done is the addition of oil & batt. gauges & side steps.
