I am trying to figure out what is the best alignment or positioning for a steering stabilizer. I am replacing the one from the PO - it drove fine, but I did not really like how it was set-up in terms of alignment and that it seems to hang a bit low. So I have loosely put it how I think it should go - basically I want the stabilizer body to basically be as parallel to the one piece tie-rod as possible - and I want to make sure it is somewhere in the middle of its range of motion. (FWIW - the jeep has the ross box and bell crank, but has been modified to a single drag link to a one piece tie-rod).

How does this look to others? I probably need to extend the distance between the mounts a bit more so as not to bottom the piston out. Honestly, I don't really know if this thing helps much at all anyway.

I don't have pics of how it was set-up - but the mount on the passenger side (in front of the D27 pumpkin) was under the tie rod and thus made that side lower and more forward than the driver side mount and the driver side mount was also lower and slightly more under the axle. I think this might have been done to allow more room to extend the piston as it may want to interfere with the front of the pumpkin. Any reason it should be that way - or am I ok with my re-positioning?

Make sure it is in the center of it's travel straight-ahead, and that there is no interference or outside contact from full-lock to full-lock.

As to effectiveness, I think they help a bit, but are not a cure-all for other steering issues.

Saginaw is the only cure for a Ross box, but until that they help quite a bit.

Valuable if you hit a rock or tree at the right moment saving a possible broken finger. As others said only masks underlying steering problems. I don't feel a need for one with Saginaw p/s and I won't add one to the Ross steering as I am keeping everything original on the REN II. Don't do much off road with either rig anyway.

I am just replacing and re-aligning the one that is on my jeep - it came with the jeep from the PO along with the one piece tie-rod. I have no complaints with my steering currently - its worked fine for me for the past 5 years. If it becomes too sloppy and too much of an issue in the future, I will go with saginaw...for now I just want to replace what is there and maybe make it a bit better in terms of clearance and alingment.

As stated they will cover up a certain amount of issues with worn steering but that's not what they're really for & shouldn't be used for that. The stabilizer's real benefit is ameliorating shock loads to the Ross steering components at speed- i.e. hitting a pot hole on the highway. They really won't do much for you in low speed situations.
