    Ok, here goes...

My speedometer does not work. All I have done was make sure there was a cable and that it was attached at both ends. It is.

What next? I've never had to mess with one before...

    Thanks!

First thing I would do is unscrew it from the speedo and move the jeep the inside cable should move. That will give you a place to start. If it does not turn possible bad inner cable or striped gear in the tranny

The cable is present, but does not turn while moving.

I was able to turn the cable by hand while at a stop. I could turn it while it was in the speedo as well. The needle in the speedo moved quite easily.

What should I look for next?

I'll tell you what I found on my wagon. The end of the shaft on the t-case where the cable goes into is crimped of course, but for whatever reason was too loose and the cable just turned inside of it. I pulled it out and very carefully used a center punch on it to compress it so it would hold the cable snug. The gear is on the other end of that shaft also. You'll see there is a nut that holds the shaft in, it also serves as a bushing for the shaft. I think it was a 7/8" socket size. It's worth a try checking those out. The internal/driving gear is obviously harder to check out since you have to remove the end cap.
