My speedometer has not worked since I resurected my beast from its 27 year slumber.

The cable was disconnected when I got it. When you connected it squeals like a pig. The noise is definitley coming from the speedometer and not the cable on down. You can reach under the dash and turn what the cable turns and it turns but feels tight.

    Any thoughts?

Are speedometers a can of worms to open up?

The gears inside the speedo may be rusted and thus not turning smoothly. Does the speedo and/or odometer function despite?

mine also did not function after sitting since the mid 70's.

took it out and pulled the assembly apart [ not to difficult ] the speedo and odometer were gummed up. cleaned well with brake cleaner and reassembled and all is well! i admit i was surprised

i would also install a new cable.

    Yup!

The guages all work fine. The little light for the hi-beam works. The back lights work when the head lights are on. I bet something is gummed up or rusted. That has been the culprit on just about every other little issue I have had with him. The jeep has set just about all of its life. When I took of the original tires off last fall they still had the little tits on the side.

Mine was doing that and it was the bushing in the speedo head. I lubed it and it ran a short time but finally went crazy and broke completely. Had to replace it with one from a junk yard.

Mine too squealed, but it wasn't the speedo, it was the cable.

With the cable disconnected from the t-case try to pull the cable out of the housing. If you can then it's definitely broken.

Granted it doesn't mean it's not broken if you can't cause it could be twisted almost into.

That's alot easier to fix than the speedo so I'd try replacing it first.

It was not the cable. I took the speedo out and it had and internal part broken. I ordered an new cluster from Krage this morning.

Has anyone gotten one of the aftermarket speedos? Are they good reproductions or are the cheap knock-offs?

So much of the ADA OMIX stuff is junk, but what else are you gonna do?

yeah, I was thinking about doing the same thing. In my case my case I want to rebuild the whole dash. I would like to know if all the same sending units will still work with it.

I got a new one and it works fine and was almost an exact replica. Seems like the only difference besides the single digit vs the double digit was the "E" and "F" were reversed on the fuel guage.

See my webshots album for pics.

You might consider having your original repaired. I do not know the cost but these are good people to deal with. AM

Well I got a new aftermarket unit installed today and took it for a test run. The needle was a little "bouncey". Is that normal or a sign of something like a poorly lubricated cable?

It is not all that objectionable just not as smooth as my 2003 Ford pick-up

That's how mine was even with a brand new cable. I have a feeling it's pretty normal.

A couple of questions about that statement,
    1. Does the fuel gauge still work good?
    2. Is your tank under the seat or under the rear of the Jeep?

The reason I ask is that the local 4wd shop told me that if the "F" & "E" are reversed the gauge would not work on the under seat tank senders.

    Thanks,
