    Help,

I have a 1963 CJ5 that I use occasionally mostly weekends. It has been driving well until this season where I have been having some carb issues. loss of power, rough idle and hesitations.

I am not a mechanic, I have general knowledge but far from a mechanic.

The plugs are heavily sooted so will be changing them out next week.

I decided to to see if the choke was not stuck open and is physically working OK so I removed the air intake cover on top of the Solex carb and peered down the barrel while opening and closing the choke lever ...I don't see a butterfly flap opening or closing! nothing physically changes....Is it me that is complete noob or is the butterfly flap for choke hidden not visible from the top

I then open and close the throttle and yes there is a butter fly flap that opens wide and and closes while squirting gas into the throttle body. However the choke seems not to move this flap at all.
    Am I missing soemthing here?

Tried looking for a schematic but the ones I found were illegible.

    Thanks

Sorry, I don’t have a schematic, but the Solex uses an enriching circuit rather than a traditional butterfly. It adds more gas internally rather than cutting off the airflow to create vacuum against the jets. Same result, different route.

Maybe just needs a cleaning and float adjustment? Maybe needle valve replacement too?

Thank you ....that clears up the butterfly flap. I will play with the idle and mixture screws first and if that does not work then maybe get the carb cleaned and adjusted.
