According to the Factory Service Manual (FSM):

The Lubrication Chart indicates using "Universal Joint Lubricant"

Search this site for "Knuckle Puding" I have also seen 140W gear oil recommended.

I put a 50/50 mix of 90w gear oil and light wheelbearing grease to help keep it in the housings. They are notorious for leaks. Been that way for two years no problems.

The manual calls for 140 weight oil. That's what I put in.

Here's a tip. Usually one puts oil in until it is just at the level of the fill hole and it just begins to seep out.

    Don't do that.

Instead, fill it until it is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch below the level of the fill hole. That comes from an old Jeep mechanic who used to be manager of the repair shop.

    good luck

I don't think it really matters what you put in the knuckles. Just lube them. For hell sake I bet Billy's next paycheck that mine are dry as a bone!

    [rant on]

    Repeat after me:

If the knuckle seals leak, they are bad. Replace them.
If the knuckle seals leak, they are bad. Replace them.
If the knuckle seals leak, they are bad. Replace them.

After replacing the seals per the FSM, fill the knuckles with 140wt lube and fugettaboutit.

Also, kamel and 66cj5 are dead nuts on the money with their comments. When done right, the D25/27 front axle will dribble nary a drip on your pristine driveway.

If it leaks you know you got oil in it and nothing will happen if it quits leaking something is wrong or out of oil
