The starter was recently rebuilt and while pulling it I noticed the rear part that was not painted black started to surface rust and looks bad, at least to me. Is there some clear coat that can handle the heat that can be put on to avoid the unsightly rust?

Would have been painted black from the factory.

Some re-builders don't paint the end plate but I always did. Wire brush it and paint.

If you don't want black, you can get engine enamel that looks like cast iron.

Get some Ospho and dampen a rag and wipe the unfinished metal until all the light rust is gone. Final wipe with a water damped rag. Let it dry, then coat it with the paint of your choice.

I stripped my Garage Motor and clear coated the whole motor with Rust-oleum Clear Coa[IMG]t, makes the motor look like Iron.
