Rear disc brakes now with pics

Started assembling the rear disc brakes on dad's 7 tonight, I know that it is an amc 20, but the setup will work on most anything. We used cj thin front rotors, gm metric calipers and speedway motor's weld on brackets. Went together very smoothly. Will try to get pic's posted tomorrow.

Did you weld steel to cast Iron? I know it is something that can be done but everytime I have done it the cast iron has become very brittle. Just a safety question?

For those weld on brackets how do you center it up and make it so straight? That is my only fear about welding on thebrackets is that knowing me, the bracket will be off a touch. So how'd you do it :)

You slide the caliper onto the rotor where you want it and let it hold the bracket in place when you weld. With the floating gm caliper you don't have to be perfect.

Very cool. What kit did you end up using? I have seen the brackets before and they are realtively cheap.

IIRC you can weld dissimilar (weldable) metals very successfully using a 309L stainless stick electrode. That's what was used to weld the steel plate to my splitting maul head... it's taken a real beating for over 20 years and never cracked.

Additionally, I don't think the tubes on the AMC20 are cast... only the center section.

Dan, didn't use a kit. Picked up the rotors, hoses, and brake lines from flaps. Ordered the brackets from speedway. Will try to assemble a list of parts.

    Just adding my 2 cents:

One thing to make sure you do is tighten up the rotor and bolt the caliper (without pads) firmly to the bracket to eliminate any wiggle room. Then, as he said, slide the caliper over the rotor. You can square it up by measuring from side to side. I usually weld both sides of the bracket but not everyone does. I've done many race cars like this and never had a problem. Yet. :)

Cool. now i jsut have to find out which set works with a 6 lug waggie rotor or another 6 lug rotor . I like bolt on caliper mounts but they are expensive, i know those speedway ones are pretty cheap.

Yea alist of parts you used and where you picked them up fromwould be a huge help. I really want to put disks on at least the front of my dana 25's. I just didnt know how to go about doing this whithout either putting in a new axle or getting pretty expensive with gathering parts.

For the front axle do a search for disc brake, it has been done many times, and it would be easier to find a bracekt that botls on then try to weld a bracket on.

For the rear brackets, Speedway Motors has another style for the same calipers that might be easier to align. Only a buck or so more. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/3346,8_GM-Caliper-Bracket.html

I've also seen elsewhere two-piece brackets that bolt together, giving you a better registration for the caliper. Once you get them where you want, you can weld it up.

Dan, judging by the NAPA picture, the front waggie caliper mounts with the long pins. If it does, measure the distance between the mounting holes and you may be able to use the speedway bracket and the same rotors and calipers as you have on the front. As for the bolt on mounts, you have to use their rotors so the bracket lines up correctly. As for the brackets that bkap linked to, I would shy away from those. I saw a set of those rip in half last year while wheeling.

The rotors are 7/8 thick 82 cj fronts and new lug studs from the same.
The calipers and hoses are 84 Monte Carlo (gm metric calipers).
The brackets are speedway motors weld on gm metric.

Pull the axle shafts, remove old studs and cut the backing plate/bearing retainer down to where the disc will slide over and press in the new studs. Reinstall the axle and mount up the caliper on the bracket. Place caliper on the rotor and position where you want it on the axle. Weld the brackets in place and then connect the brake lines. Bleed brakes and you are set. It has been discussed what needs to be done in the way of master cylinder/combo valve. I am currently leaving the stock one on, but will change to the corvette 4 wheel disk setup.
