Has anyone ever considered making their own corner guards?

I wouldn't even know where to begin but I imagine it couldn't be too difficult if you knew the exact radius needed for the bend (given the right equipment, of course). I can't seem to find a sheetmetal shop near me willing to make some simple 18 gauge pieces so taking this idea to a shop is probably out of the question. Just thought I'd see if you guys have come up with your own...

I will do it, but with all the sheetmetal shops near me I will just bring over my stainless and let them do the work. Thought about it and realized I would need to make a sort of mold to be able to bend it over then heat to releave the stress.

I have made some before and I can tell you it is kind of a PITA if you don't have the right equipment. Finding a metal shop would probably be the route I would go if I was gonna do anymore, or just break down and buy some already made.

Bet the radius on a welding tank is pretty close to the same as the rear corner ;) Some heat and bending on a piece and then some pressure around the tank should yield a nice bend. Also might be able to find a pvc pipe with a very similar radius to use to bend it around also. Not sure how thick a material your looking to use though.

I was thinking 1/8", just like the commercially produced corners. I have a few welding tanks I could take a look at but with the price of steel, I think this is something I'm better off buying.

I made my own, I used 1/8 inch aluminum diamond plate. First I measured from the bottom of the tub up and then from the tailgate to how far I wanted past the fender well. I then cut the rectangle peice from the diamond plate sheet I had. I started at the tailgate and drilled holes on the edge and bolted the edge down and started to bend the diamond plate right on the tub. I drilled and bolted it every few inches to keep the diamond plate tight against the tub and worked my way around the bend. Once the bend was tight and the whole thing was bolted to the tub I then scribed the cut out above the wheel well and the wheel well as well. Then I took it off and used my band saw to make the cuts. A jig saw will work as well. Go to my webshots page to check them out. link is in my signature. There is a good shot of them and the rocker guards I made as well. Its one of the last pics in my jeep album. hope this helps.
