I do not use any supports other than the u-joint and the bell coupler at the box.
Here is a pic from up top
I have headers, which allows more room to work with

JIm what kind of column are you running? I noticed earlier that you have an awful lot of the motor mount cut, your column comes along way thru the floor which drops the angle of your steering shaft down into the motor mount, the postal column will leave the u-joint several inches higher thus leaving alot more motor mount left. Most all of the ones I have seen have the u-joint no more than say 1/2"-3/4" from the firewall. Nothing wrong with your setup, just never seen one quite like it, even for a flat fender.

stock 2A outer column, with modified 72-75 upper shaft, steering wheel, all this in stock hole thru floorboard
72-75 modified/shortened lower shaft with 72-75 ujoint and 72-75 bell coupler at box
no mods to grille or front x member
    did this install in 1976
