New Guy With Old CJ5 And Nothing Makes Sense!

I am getting ready to replace my steering wheel and like the school bus idea, what makes and what years should I be looking for? Any NOS source for them?

And my belly rubs the little wheel now, definitely wont fit behind a bigger one unless I move the seat to the back!

I think you’re exactly correct, the knuckle looks like it is rotated around too much and it appears that thay are pitched outward due to the downward rotation of the axle.

 

Here you go, cant find id on either side of the tranny.

 

The springs, although a little rusty, still have stickers with part numbers on them. I have receipts dated 2008 for most of the work done so they are pretty new. But the steering components have way too much wiggle in them. The belcrank and pin it sits on both have a ton of slop, also the drag link and the steering sector.

So I think replacing most of it and rebuilding the box will tighten things up alot.

 

Your new buddy Pete Debella has NOS steering wheels, but they are listed as POR (price on request). Gonna guess that means expensive. If you aren't too hung up on having the original "Sheller" name on it, a reproduction wheel for the appropriate year should work...though I do recall some mention of spline/fitment issues.

Maybe best to check with Pete or Carl Walck for replacements.

I have extended shackles on my CJ so I added 6 degrees positive caster and she tracks straight as an arrow.

 

I guess I misunderstood, I thought people were literally swapping on steering wheels from school buses because they were larger in dia. than the Jeep wheel and gave more leverage than even the large Jeep steering wheel. My bad. When the time comes I'll talk with the usual suspects for a new one. It does not need to be NOS as long as it is a quality piece. Mine works for now but is ugly as sin as quite a bit of plastic is gone off it.

 

Welcome from San Diego. Aside from all these other discussions I can offer some low-tech, cheap advice. I notice in your first picture, the hood is down and the latches are not secure. You'll want to break that bad habit real quick or you'll be looking for a new hood, windshield and undershorts.

 

You have cup holders and a radio, Jeep is Mint! Seriously it looks in pretty good shape. Definitely a Dana 44 rear axle. Not sure on the tranny, I have a Muncie so not that familiar with what the T-86's look like.

 

Ok. So the trans is most likely a t-86. The ID embossment will be on the driver's side, above the fill plug. The case is visually similar to t-90, but the bend in that shifter is a big clue. This trans matches the date of the engine, putting the drivetrain at '66. The radiator and grill appear to be an early v-6 model also, so let's say that's '66 too.

The fenders are '70-'71, and the windshield is '70-'75.

The title and the tub might be all that's originally left of the '63.

I'd be willing to bet the axles are also from the '66, with the front being a D27 and the rear having 2-piece axles.

The motor mounts and any remnants of a frame-mounted battery tray would be big clues to if the frame (and steering box) is from '63 or '66. If the motor mounts look factory, I'd bet the frame is '66 also.
