New Fuel pump - same prob

Just replaced 48 year old fuel pump that was working, but leaking, till two weeks ago it stopped altogether. Pulled old one off and replaced with new one. Still not drawing gas from tank or filling filter ! Shot air to tank and getting gurgle sounds so that is ok. Is there a *fuel rod* inside fuel pump opening on engine side that fuel pumps attaches? On the new/old pump, there is just an two inch or so arm that goes in engine side hole and looks like rests on cam shaft? and moves up and down to activate pump?

If a rod is used where did it go? Is it something I have to reach in to find or would it fell off down in the engine bay?

That's correct. The arm is what works the pump. The only variable in this is that sometimes a spacer is used between the block and pump to "adjust" how much the arm travels. Someone else will have to expand on that.....

I'd start checking the simple things. Got gas? Got enough gas? Rotted fuel line leaking air somewhere? Hard line worn/rusted through anywhere?

 

Check the flex line that comes from the tank and connects to the pump. Mine did the same thing, found out the hose liner had separated from the covering and was collapsed. It would allow shop air to pass thru to the tank but not allow suction to draw gas into the pump.
Post results of what you find.

 

Had the same problem when I put a new one on the 2a. Ended up the pickup in the gas tank had so much rust in there that it would severly limit the amount of fuel that could be picked up. What shape is your gas tank in??

 

Glenn L...I had the exact same situation as willysnut...better replace ALL of your flexible fuel line to rule out any holes or cracks that might be sucking air...KCJ
