My buddy picked up 5 over the weekend. It's titled as a 59. I think it's really a 65 according to the vin. 8305 198770
Anyhow, it currently has 9" front drums and 11" drums on the rear. o_O
First order of business is to swap the 11" to the front and 9" to the rear.
Next he will need a master cylinder. There are a ton of master cylinders out there. I know that he should go dual resivore. What master cylinder are you guys running with 11" drums?

A dual MC will require some sort of mounting adapter. I whipped my own up & went with a Willwood aftermarket piece. R&P have a deign of their own that uses the Willwood MC, Herm has one that replicates the 70's bracket & uses the stock 70's MC.

You need to be careful with this- depending on what you pick up there may be issues with proportioning valves, holdoff valves, wheel cylinder sizing etc. This has been discussed in depth a few times here, try a search on "Willwood" or "dual mc", that should bring up most of the relevant posts.

Bracket fab is not an issue. I had in mind picking up a drum brake master for a 73 cj5. I know he will need some brake line adapters and possibly some front 11" brake wheel cylinders.

Fabbing *is* easy- it's figuring out the interaction of the new MC & the pushrod, taking into account clearance from variously inconveniently located other parts, that makes deciding the required bracket dimensions & where/how it attaches to the frame such a memorable exercise.

The 72 drum/drum would be a good choice.

I forgot to mention that the jeep still has the Ross steering box on it. Did your fairmont master clear that?

You can use the dual unit on the 70-71 model cj5.

Why not just get a set of 11" for the front and leave the rear alone?

I have done this many times. It seems that most of the braking occurs at the front. Not much seat of the pants difference from good working 9" rear brakes to 11" or even discs. I think the big takeaway is that no matter what system you are running, to make sure that they are in good working order, well matched components, and adjusted.

We're doing this as a budget build and trying to work with what he has. The majority of braking force has to come from the front. If you have too much rear brake, under hard braking you will spin out. The po touted his " knowlege " and was proud of adding the 11" brakes to the rear and not to the front. The front has the original 9" drums and its all connected to the factory master cylinder.
The jeep was given to my buddy for free. It is a 134,t90 combo. Runs great, just needs brakes fixed and seats to be drive able. We are working on getting it off pavement worthy so he can trailer it to the hills. If a cheap set of 11" drums comes along then we will def put them all the way around. But right now he just wants to get a feel for how he wants to build his jeep. So many decisions as for a guy with a blank canvas :watch:

I told him to drive mine, drive his, use it for at least a year before tearing it down and spending real cash. Although he is already eyeing my spare v6 frame and a running 231 on craigslist......
