Just need some advice from experience. Do or should I loosen the caps to get the upper half of the seal out? I have a problem supporting the engine to do this because the block is sitting on the bare frame w/o the tranny so the jack is under the pan. I don't have a hoist or engine stand and I can't figure out how to support the block to drop the pan until I get the tranny back in. After the tranny's in, I'm not sure I can get the upper half out.

    Thanks for any help.

if it were me, I would replace the upper as well
yes you have to remove the rear main cap to access the upper if I am reading your question correctly
how you are going to do this in your current situation is another matter
take the engine out and lay on its side ?

#1 Can't support it on the pan, that has to come off. So..... I'd fab up a support off the upper Bellhousing holes to support the rear of the motor onto the frame rails. (assuming the front is still attached :) Mabe flat stock going across side to side and put in some uprights to sit on the frame. Make sure its solid and you can drop the pan and go. I used sealant on the dowel plugs too and don't cut 'em off. HTH
