Alright so I finally got around to getting the starter rebuilt. Well I thought it needed to be rebuilt, but when the guy got it apart he said all that was wrong was the bushing was bad (the one on the back cap of the housing) Since the bushing was bad it was causing the motor to ground out on itself and not work. But he said there should be another bushing inside the bellhousing that the other end of the starter would go in. I have never heard of anybody talk about a bushing inside and was wondering if there is one and will I need to replace it??

Yup. There is a bronze bushing that presses into the bell housing on the L-head. When you bolt the starter up, the end of the shaft slips into the bushing to support it as the starter bears aginst the ring gear to crank the engine. The bearing is cheap, only a few bucks at a Jeep parts house.

Try it and see if it slops around any, you can see the end of the shaft and the bushing if the tub is off. Otherwise I think I'd just replace it.

sloppy starter bushing will chew up a flywheel and starter eventually. Mine was "egged" shaped slightly, so out it came. (Flywheel ring was destroyed already so it was all apart anyways.

Replacing this while on the floor of your shop is a tad challenging so I can't imagine doing it on the vehicle. It is possible and there is a little dust cap on the back of the bell. I used a small MM socket as a punch. The new one didn't fit real tight (Chinese sorta-fits) so I removed it and used lock-tite. Use a dap of lube or dry graphite dust inside the bushing. I used synth disc brake grease.
