    Hi all
    Bear with me I am from the UK, I have a jeep sold to me as an M38A1 I think it is something different so I am asking all the experts on here to help me with this, (I have posted a picture or pictures) I hope which may help, for a start it has on the wings or fenders as you call them the WILLYS name stamped on them and has a welded up tail gate, it has a civilian speedo drive from the transfer box but! a military dash with speedo in the middle and 4 gauges in the 4 corners, the bonnet has the cut out for a snorkel and the fuel/gas tank is only 10 gallons, the seats seem to be the same as a WWII but the frames are M38A1 type? except thay dont bolt to the body but to the floor, there is no tool box under the passenger seat and no glove box, the gas filler is different in the respect that there are no screws showing on the outside, it does have a F Head engine but has been converted to 12 volt and is not waterproofed, oh and it does have a spit screen which seems to be original. If anyone out there can help me it would put me out of my misery, and I have found the chassis numberwhich is 83056, there are no data plates anywhere on the vehicle. thanking you in advance. Mark

    It doesn't look like an M38A1, looks more like a CJ5, but not quite. Sparky may be onto something with the M606A2/A3 idea. Did you try www.g503.com?

    M606A2/3 were CJ-5s built by Kaiser for military export, thus I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it is.

    Interesting, smaller than military gas filler opening and no indents in the side for top bows. Doesn't appear to have shackle reversal.

    Does the battery box cover on the cowl open up, or is welded on like a CJ5?
    Whatever it is, it looks to be in great shape! Definitely a keeper.

    Hi and thanks guys I will now be looking at these sites you have all suggested, the battery box cover is welded on and the hand brake is not in between the seats but under the dash on the left side, apparently from hear say this one came from the Swiss army but I cannot prove that, what do you mean by "shackle reversal":?

    Hi I have found some more numbers re: identification on the front diff is the number 25, and on the rear diff is the number 44, on top of the gearbox are the following H87553P and WOF635857, does this mean anything to anyone, and while we are on the subject can anyone tell me what oils to use for the above please.
    Thanks Mark

    8305 = Open Body CJ-5 6 normally. My '71 = 8305 017 .......
    So it would make sense if it started out as a civi Jeep to have an 8305 prefix.

    D25 front differential and a D44 rear, no big surprises there.

    It wouldn't have a shackle reversal or mil spec gas filler, it started life as a CJ-5 as I said above. Built as a CJ-5 for military use. It was not an M38A1!!!!!

    It's just like our CJ-5s with some modifications made at the factory for military use.

    Don't know the gearbox numbers off the top of my head. Someone else here might, Tim or jpflat2a?

    Gear oil. 85-90 or whatever is common for use in gear boxes. We've discussed it before here in the past.

    Before you ask about the knuckles, that's a can of worms. Search for "knuckle pudding". ;)
