Does the kit for an M38A1 fit a '59 CJ5?

I bought a parts jeep (the M38A1) since it had several upgrades that I could use on the '59 that I am working up. But now that I get to the details, there appears to be a sorta major frame modification needed on the M38A1 to fit the kit. Do I hafta cut the clutch-brake bearing from my frame to bolt on the one from the parts chassis?

I wrote Harm at the same time I posted this question. Do not know if Herm is responsive on the "not work" days when I pound on my Jeep.

There must be some lurkers that have done this before...

    Thanks for the reply..

If you are talking about modifying a single cylinder frame to a dual cylinder frame, I had to cut out the master cylinder mount in order to put the dual in. It was a very easy thing to do - used a sawzall to do the job.

I also had to remove the lower fixture for the pedal assy -- the stock bracket is fastened on through the same holes as the rivets that hold it on now. It'll also require two holes drilled in the top of the frame for additional mounting screws.

Now, I put in the stock jeep assembly, and not Herm's, but I think his is much the same thing...

Cutting out the master cylinder mount is a rubicon kind of decision, so you gotta be sure you want to complete the job or otherwise you have a frame with no mounts for a master cylinder.

Be sure to get the right master cylinder without the 'bail' or wire. It is much easier to fit the unit into the jeep.

Call Herm direct, he is a very busy guy and sometimes it takes a while for him to reply to all his emails...

Look on Herm's site. Shows mastercylinder and link to other site for install.

I put one on my '60, glad I did too. Pretty darn easy if you happen to have the tub off, otherwise it could be a little bit of a pain. Yeah, Herm is busy, but he will answer a call. Keep trying him if the line is busy.

The real crux is that my pedal bearing is not only riveted, but welded to the frame. (And, I put the tub on two weeks ago and really do not want to back up right now...)

You don't have to remove that "pedal bearing", as you call it. I think it's called a cross-shaft bushing or something like that. But anyway, all you have to do is grind the heads off the two rivets and punch or drill them out. You then use the holes to bolt the new bracket on with. You also have to drill two holes in the top frame rail for two additional bolts. You don't have to mess with the welds, unless you need to grind a little clearance on one or something.

There's a little bracket that bolts onto the big bracket, and that's the new support for the end of the cross-shaft. It replaces that long support that was bolted to the side of the original master cylinder.

Unless, of course, the M38A1 has a different setup. You'd still be better off to talk to Herm.
