Herculining My Jeep

So I decided to put Herculiner inside the tub of my Jeep. Eventually I plan on replacing the entire body but until then I want to keep what I have in decent shape and stop the rust that has started. Here's a couple of pics. What a mess I found underneath the gas tank.

I will update as I progress. I currently have seven days off and I hope to get this done before I go back to work. And yes that's an unspent shotgun shell I found under the tank.

I also found out that my Jeep was yellow, then blue and now red.

 

I think most of the guys here will agree, but I see no reaon to replace your entire tub. You've got a clean lookin jeep w/ a lot of sheetmetal in place. Repair the rust and keep on keepin on.

 

Herc is kinda rough like sand paper. I had a YJ with it in it and hated it when I had to replace the clutch or remove a seat because it scrape my knuckles or arms up. I would use durabak smooth for the interior trust me. Sand color would look good red.

I have actually looked at both and I want the rougher non slip surface. When I scrape my knuckles down to the bone I'll be sure and post about it so you can be the first to say "I told you so".R)

 

The smooth is still non slip it just does not have the sand in it so it acts more like a rubber mat. Saw a TJ with it the other day and I was impressed.

 

the rough stuff will hurt, and need a uv sealer on top of it to keep it nice and shiny, but you already knew this. that said, i went against popuar opinion and love what i have. it doesn't clean up really nice, but i don't really care about that. it's faded a bit, but i intend on putting some more on and then sealing that after i settle on a tranny. and it'll wear through some fabric right quick, i almost killed a backpack after two semesters of using my cj as a daily driver.

but for some reason i like it. i must be a glutton for punishment...

 

Try Dupli-Color truck bed lining.

I just did about 75% of my whole jeep.

Used a smooth roller and it came out smooth.

Oh and the rust thing, 60% of my jeep is nothing but rust.

So lets not talk about two floor panels are rusted and you need to replace the tube.

A little rust repair is pretty much the price of admission for a 40-50 year old Jeep. I don't think you'll get much sympathy for replacing the tub here. CJs are comparatively easy to patch - all flat pieces and simple curves, few compound curves. Suck it up and fix it.

 

Yeah I'm working on trying to fix it. Not my expertise but we'll see what happens.

 

Don't know if you have seen the b4 and after thread yet, but take a good look at what some of these Jeeps looked like at 1st. Yours looks good, trust us.
A little work and it will be a very sweet Jeep.

 

I don't want it seem like I'm complaining about the condition of my Jeep. I'm just trying to track the progress. I realize with the age I am pretty lucky with what I have. I don't have any experience with body work though so it will be interesting to see how things progress.

Just take your time and ask along the way. Some of these guys and gals are true craftsman.
Check with the local JR college, they may offer an auto body course or at the least a welding class.

 

Thanks for the help and words of encouragement guys. I will definately continue to ask for help. To be honest I wouldn't want a Jeep that was in perfect shape. It's more fun to work on it, plus it feels more like MY Jeep the more I do to it. The way I see it anyone can buy a Jeep but to build one is what it's all about.

Yeah it's the large one piece.

 

O.K. I got the floor done! It's not pretty but it seems strong.
