Trying to get clear picture in my mind. I did not have the pieces under the dash after the blower motor so ordered from Walcks. After the square part at the blower motor is where this new piece from Walcks is. It only has one connection which diverts air to defrost or floor. That is to me the obvious defrost cable. On my inside square box that the round blower motor housing attaches to, there are no flap or any holes where something might have been at one time. The square box that houses the heat core has a flapper as you describe that directs more or less air thru the core. I assumed the temp cable as you have indicated. So I don't see an second cable place inside. Which pic is this second cable?

In the first pic, is that the brake cable in the upper right? Trying to visualize.

image.jpg Here is a pic of my blower with the new Walcks diverter. And my air control cable is actually the longes of all 3 so I assumed it would be the one needed to go all the way to the flapper under the hood. The guy I got the parts from claims it was off a 64 CJ.

Which side of the inside of the fire wall is your heater mounted? Some were on the passenger side behind the glovebox. Some were mounted on the drivers side. Could make a difference in mounting all that stuff under there.

Drivers side. That is the side where the factory holes are for the air to come in. I could be wrong, but I think all the early CJ5's were drivers side. I know on wagons and trucks it typically came in on the passenger side, as well as some of the CJ2/3's.

I've seen pictures both ways. Though on the passenger side there would not be any fresh air ductwork.

Yours doesn't have a 3rd connection. My 3rd connection is in the factory piece that you have a replacement from Walcks. It's at the opposite end of it from the defroster.

In this pic you're looking up from under the steering wheel. The thick black piece is the wiring harness. Up in the top you can see where the hood hinge bolts on. To the left on the heater assy itself, you see the line where the two heater pieces connect to give you reference on where the cable connects to. You don't have a connection there because the Walcks replacement piece doesn't have it..

My '61 has the three cable system in question. Workinprocess stated it correctly. There is one cable inside, defrost. Two cables exit the firewall through the harness grommet, air control and temp control. Temp control attaches to the valve installed in the "in" hose to the core. Air control goes to the lever arm on the box. Note that the heater works much better if the large hose is hooked up between the grill and heater box. I wish I could post pictures.

Here is how I have my 59 cj5 setup with the 3 manual cable system defrost goes to the flap inside my walcks4wd.Com reproduction plenum. Air control exits cab through firewall to the large flapper inside the engine compartment on top of my heater core. And my temp control I would connect to an in line valve I'm my heater hoses to shut off coolant flow to the heater core, but I can't because my cable has been cut off by a previous owner

Had long talk with Carl at Walcks and he said the really early CJ's actually had a cardboard plenum and only 1 cable went to it, the defroster, which we all agree on. The air control went to the side of the core to control that flapper which determines how much air goes over the heater core, which we all agree on. Finally the temp cable went to the valve out by the waterpump to control how much water was sent to the core. He is sending me a pic of the 59 they have there showing this. To account for jeepmc metal box after the fan motor, Carl said in later 60's they moved from cardboard plenum to metal and maybe some mixed cable arrangement before going to the vacuum controls. Sounds reasonable to me. I'm going to make sure the cable reaches and put the valve in once I see his pic. Thanks to all for input and help.

I have a 65 with the pneumatic set up. All pieces are there in the original location.
The pushbuttons function as they should BUT the vacuum is not diverted/routed two the two ports as was intended.
And the vacuum actuators don't work when tested with a mitivac brake bleeder. One sort of does, the other does not. The vacuum coming from the engine is not very strong. Anyone have experience with the vacuum diverter? Anyone know if the vacuum actuators can be repaired of found?
I have a FSM but it has nothing regarding the heater plenum and details.
    Thanks in advance.

Mine is a metal plenum. It's factory for 1966. Maybe mine being a diesel model makes things different also? All i know is I've had it apart to fix the heater core once and replace it once. There's one flapper on the core in the engine compartment and two flappers in the plenum. No valve in a hose.

That's the same as my 65 F134. Blower rins fine but no air comes out the defrost or floor openings. There are air leaks at various joints so it seems to be generating pressure but it can't get out. I think I need to remove the plenum and see what gives.

Don't feel too bad.... Mine's completely clear. The fan makes noise, but not much air comes out. I keep thinking about doing the upgrade blower motor.

I did the binkey thing, new motor, reverse rotation. Waste of time. The vacuum pots are faulty. Ordered some today.
And I have a FSM. Which is not always clear and concise. That's why we come to the forum to find out what others have experienced. Not to avoid the price of admission to jeepworld!

Just another FWIW. There is a world of difference in air flow in my wagon heater between opening and closing the air control door. Mine will roast you out even if it's 30 degrees outside. As Greevesman discovered he wasn't getting the air flow out in this case, but also not being able to pull air in across the heater core will result in the heater not working well.
In the 2 fan belt thread Arnold Layne posted an interesting picture showing a manual turn valve on the water pump. Can't wait to see the picture from Walck's. ;)

Have not received pic yet as he probably got busy and out of sight out of mind. But I did find this on his sight when looking at other stuff. Now to see if my cable would even reach that far.

Very interesting indeed. Same style valve as on the wagon. :)
