Hard Time Starting After Warm Up.

    When you had it apart did you check or adjust the float level?

    Wait a minute. How much of your electrical system is 6 volt and how much 12 volt?

    The starter was the only 6v part . Always worked fine

    Makes no sense. Doubling the voltage means a cable half the size would be adequate.

    If you have a voltage drop the fault is elsewhere, such as bad connections or grounds.

    And you said it starts fine when cold, when cranking is harder.

    Please describe exactly what you mean by hard starting, and your exact procedure for starting the Jeep. Also, does the engine turn over easily or does it turn over somewhat slow?

    Excellent! When it does that does it have black smoke from the exhaust from too much gas? Also, how long had it sat since you shut it off?

    This was 20-30 minutes after being shut off.A white puff of smoke comes from the carburetor, but I haven't checked the tailpipe.

    The symptoms seem to suggest a bit of flooding, it acts like it is burning off the excess gas/vapors when it tries to start. Float level adjustment too high, needle valve not shutting off fuel flow completely is still my first thought on this problem.

    Ill take apart the carb and look at the float.. what should it be measured at?

    The exact setting is dependent on which parts your carb has. The Jeep-specific rough service float valve is different than other applications.

    yeah, I found the instructions from the place i bought the kit from. it is saying 15/32 for the float level, and 1 1/4 for the drop.

    Sounds to me like it's just running too rich. When it's cold, you should need the choke to get it running right until it's warm. If you're starting fine without the choke when cold, you're going to be too rich when it's warm. If it's already too rich and you shut it off, it will likely only start if you open the throttle all the way. You should pull the spark plugs and take a pic, I have a sneaky suspicion they're going to be black.

    There was a weight and check ball that was actually missing, and the float level was off.. must had been flooding pretty bad. I think that fixed it..

    Like I said, "recent rebuild" = red flag.

    I can't count how many times on this forum I have posted about those weights and balls getting lost when someone takes the YF carb apart.

    Vapor lock? Fuel line getting too hot and fuel vaporizing, will cause hard to start condition until fuel cools down. Usually will act like it's flooded and require wide open throttle and cranking to start. Cold engine will start fine. Will usually start fine when hot if restarted within a very short period of time of shutting down.
