When I had my windshield glass replaced I had two choices, green or gray. There was no clear.

We're not talking tint as in tinting film. The glass shops are offering clear windshield glass or green, and apparently grey too.

When we received windshield glass at the Jeep dealer, it came in a plywood box. Build a box, cover the glass with packing, and send it.

The NH law specifies "aftermarket." It does not seem to differentiate if it is applied or in the glass.

I do know cops hate it, because they want to see the driver clearly when they approach a vehicle, and I think that was one basis for the law - as well as to avoid any vision impairment for the driver.

Re-read the NH Code on tinted windows; it specifically states "on" the glass, not in the glass. That code relates primarily to the aftermarket applied window tint. Most states have a similar Code, even here in Florida where close to 25% of the cars on the road have aftermarket applied film. Read the Code carefully, and you will see the forward side windows (driver/passenger) can only have a lighter tint so the front occupants can be seen from outside -for the cops sake.

I don't like the dark tinted windows at all. It definitely hampers the ability to see out of them at night, and there are plenty of them around that are like that. Obviously even in the daytime you can't see in them. It is illegal and I guess the cops just don't have the resources to enforce the law.

    Maybe.
It doesn't say on the "glass." Or "in the glass"
    It does say "on" windows.

Good luck explaining the distinction to a cop on the roadside. At night. :worry:

The key word here is "on". ;)

    Okay. I get that.

So, let's say I find and install some super-dark w/s glass… tinted in the glass, not "on" it. I really doubt that would fly with law enforcement or a DMV inspector.

The word 'aftermarket' may be significant here also.

You're right on both counts, and I don't think you could find windshield glass with a heavy tint anyway.

In California the windshield needs the "DOT" stamp.....Tint is only allowed if it was factory "DOT" approved....It has to be sandwiched in the glass and not on the glass

Working on the assumption windshield manufacturers follow DOT & vehicle manufacturer requirements of at least 70% light transmission if it's got a DoT "AS1" stamp on it it's gonna be legal . Same thing for the front door windows which, for situations where safety glass is required instead of tempered glass, an "AS2" rating with the same light transmission requirement is required.

Now of course just to make things complicated AS1 glass won't fit in a vented windshield frame, Tonk for example has "AS2" glass, however as Tonk is pre-'72 when the AS standards for glass were implemented there's not much authorities can do about it.
