I have a gearset in my D44 that has pitting on the gear face. It has been stated that its from rust. I am looking at 3 different gear manufacturers, Dana, Yukon and USA standard. I am not looking at Motive, because I have been told they are not good quality. Doesn't really matter form a price standpoint because I am seeing prices from 136 bucks for USA standard. Thats really cheap. I have read that USA Standard are gears that happen to Yukon gears that are not be finish lapped for whatever reason.

Yukon gears are 275 bucks, USA standard are 135 bucks and the Dana (SVL?) gears are like 150. The last time I bought gears the space on the ring gear for branding was obviously left blank and stamped later.

I fid VERY similar prices all over. Some outliers are more expensive.

    Whats the installers consensus?

I've installed Richmond's, Strange/US Gear, Yukons, Dana, Motives, GM and AAM, and AM Generals, and probably some I am forgetting... To my knowledge they were all fine for the final owner if it wasn't me.

I put Yukon's in the Dana 44 in my M38A1 but if I had to do it all over again I think I would have found another used axle. I know right after I finished putting the rear together it seemed every time I turned around there was another M38A1 front and rear axle set for $200 or less. Would have saved me a pile of money.

I prefer Genuine Dana gears over anything if I can get them.

Well the Dana SVL ($154) gears were much cheaper than the Yukon($278 ). I put Dana gears in my front D30 and so far no issues, but I really haven't driven it enough to have an opinion.

150 bucks for a ring and pinion set seems inexpensive. Makes me wonder about the quality. Does SVL designate junk?

I used usa standard gears a d a G2 install kit when i built my d30. The G2 kit was good quality and had timkin bearings. The gears were ok quality, the box said made in china.

Just bought the USA Standard gear set from rock auto for 136 bucks. 107 for the master install kit. 5% discount is 242 with shipping.

I read that USA standard is Yukon gears, just not finish lapped. I have no idea if that is true. I assume these will be better than the pitted gears I have now. I am sure the Dana SVL line is china. Their marketing line is that the SVL line is for vehicles not driven a lot and are out of warranty. Steered me away.

Yukon are now made in China as well from what I've read. I just received my Nitro Gears for my D30 and 44 project. They appear well made and Bare Foot Offroad (vendor on Pirate4x4) gave me a great deal.
